GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

– Oscar Wilde

After an entire year of lockdowns, social distancing, and a generalized level of fear throughout our human population, we are finally emerging from our chrysalis of isolation and starting to reengage with the world at large. Many of us are encountering new anxieties as we begin this process of reintegration; hesitant to open the doorway and reluctant to embrace the outside world once more. Psychology research show that habits form in just 21 days and we have certainly had much more time than that this past year!

For many, these habits have resulted in an unconscious daily routine, a method of coping and living that results in a life of ‘going through the motions’, but not of conscious choice and engagement. This is a life expressed by distance, disinterest, lack of enthusiasm, and general separation. Understandable in many ways due to the unprecedented times in which we have been living, and so many of us have experienced heart-wrenching loss as well this past year. But this response to stress has led many to lead a mechanical existence consisting of the same actions or inactions every day. Wake up, go to work, come home, binge TV, go to sleep, and repeat the next day.

It’s time to shake things up and take back conscious control of the precious time we have been given on this Earth plane! Start small, look around and take a moment to appreciate the positives that we do have in our lives. Then take some baby steps: take a different route to work or home, listen to a different station in the car, eat something totally outside the normal wheelhouse. Stop and spend a few minutes each day just stopping to breathe, calming your mind and body during this equally stressful period of reassimilation. Making conscious choices as we traverse our daily path ensures that we are truly living and not just existing.

“I was going through the motions of life. Instead of really living, and there’s no excuse for that. It’s not something I’ll let happen again.”

-Charles de Lint

“In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love.

In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.

In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

There’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”

VERITIES FOR ETERNITY

A ‘verity’ is one of the fundamental principles of existence in this universe. Its derivation is from the Latin, ‘veritas’, meaning ‘truth’. The 18th Century French philosopher, Claude Buffier, first tied the concept of what Greek philosophers had thought of as the unconscious minds inner, inherent monologues to a view of innate human ethical and moral values. He termed these the ‘Eternal Verities’; ideas such as right versus wrong, love and compassion, sympathy and empathy, soul and conscience.

We know that every individual carries the light of the Divine within, that we are all eternal beings eventually returning to the same Source. Infinite Intelligence is that Divine Source, and Natural Law both binds us to and reminds us of our heritage. Natural Law provides definition and context to the fundamental truths, or verities, of our existence.

This philosophy is one of the three pillars of Spiritualism. When we declare our Principles in Sunday service, we acknowledge their truth and we rededicate ourselves to the quest of growth, unfoldment, and duty. These philosophical truths or verities, defined by Natural Law and our Principles, provide guidance for who we can truly aspire to be: eternal beings dedicated to service, compassion, and love.

Roman emperor and philosopher, Marcus Aurelius (121-180) wrote in his book, Meditations:

“One Universe made up of all things;

And one God in it all,

And one principle of Being,

And one Law, one Reason,

Shared by all thinking creatures,

And one Truth.”

The Philosophy of Spiritualism is built on the foundation of these fundamental, universal truths; they truly are ‘verities for eternity’.

THE MISSION OF MEDIUMSHIP

“It is a sacred calling that permits one to assuage another’s grief and sorrow. It is doubly so when one can become an instrument to be used by an angel to communicate with his loved ones of earth. To become a medium through whom a so-called ‘dead’ friend may return and speak to his loved ones in distress of soul, awaking them to the consciousness of their continued existence, and telling of their undying love, is the sweetest gift of God to man.”

THE FLOW

“Patience is the river that finds its way to the sea, by flowing through many confluences.”

– Miaden Dordevic

A confluence of water is the result of joining the flow of 2 or more streams. In our daily life, confluency is the meeting, or gathering of things, events, or individuals; a joining of ideas, hopes, and expectations of many different individuals. This is the never-ending river of life: the combining of the one with the whole.

Our journey on this physical plane is often not easy and sometimes downright unpleasant. We are not individual water molecules, captive to gravity and tide, unwillingly pulled downstream. We are thinking, eternal beings; we have the power to choose which tributary we want to sail down, which confluence to join on our travel down the river of life. This is where personal responsibility comes in.

Principle 7: “We affirm the moral responsibility of individuals and that we make our own happiness or unhappiness as we obey or disobey Nature’s physical and spiritual laws.” We are each the masters of the ships we sail. We can allow ourselves to be swept along, seemingly without purpose or goal, or we can captain our ship, following a course set with help from our guides and teachers.

It’s not always smooth sailing, but with patience and perseverance effort is always rewarded. The only guarantee in this physical life is that we will travel this journey to its’ end, with or without intention and direction by our higher self. Our duty to ourselves is to make our itinerary a deliberate, conscious choice; building on our previous experiences, learning as we go along, growing each and every day.

‘Tis not for self we feel the glow

Of passion for continued life,

But love for those whose passage mars

The growth of soul and all its aims.

For death, in his remorseless path,

Leaves here no evidence for hope,

And we must seek its guerdon there

Where chance may bring a cheering word

From out the gates of grief and pain.

But when we bridge the sombre gulf

Twixt life and death, and learn that love

Still waits upon the shining shores

Of time and fate to meet us there,

We watch forever and forever

The distant purposes of God.

RUST AND RELIGION

Gallup polls of church membership started in 1937. At that time, 73% of polled Americans belonged to a religious congregation. Over the next 60 years this number remained around 70%. Now, it has been on the decline since the late 1990’s, steadily dropping to a new low in 2021 of just 47%. Americans who have membership in a church, synagogue, or mosque are no longer a majority of the population.

This precipitous drop can be almost equally split between two groups: those who have no religious preference and those who have dropped their previous membership. Membership is also a generational issue; older Americans have a higher percentage of church affiliation than younger Americans. In response to the dropping demographics, thousands of churches across all denominations are closing their doors every year.

In the scheme of things, Spiritualism is a small player on the religious denominational map of the U.S. Membership rolls for most of our churches typically total under 100 and the number of churches and camps across the United States are also less than that. But membership rolls don’t tell the whole story, do they?

Many people today claim to be ‘spiritual but not religious’ in direct reaction to the dogma and intransigence of mainstream religion. How many times have you heard new attendees say, “Why haven’t I heard about Spiritualism before?” Their astonishment comes from finding a ‘religion’ that doesn’t judge, is inclusive of everyone, and provides actual evidence for the continuity of life and the never-ending opportunity for redemption.

As traditional theologies try and knock the rust off of the creeds and rituals that have alienated generations from their spiritual pathway, Spiritualists must rise up and remind both members and newcomers of the every-day value of a religion founded on Natural Law. There is no rust on our foundation of science based, evidential mediumship; we continue to evolve our understanding of Natural Law and our role within eternity. Welcome in, everyone!

CIRCLING BACK TO THE BEGINNING

This past year has presented many challenges to individuals, employers, churches and organizations. Our basic social behavior as a society was effectively changed overnight by mandatory social distancing. In addition to the tragedy of hundreds of thousands of lives lost and millions more sickened, many of us are suffering from the social isolation. Literally out of touch with family and friends, feelings of being adrift without a rudder are all too common.

We are never without direction, however; Spirit is always with us, in good times and bad times. Our ancestors realized this when they opened their hearts and minds to the concept of spirit communication revealed in Hydesville in 1848. Remember this time period; the transportation revolution was on the horizon, but the railroad did not become practical or prominent until after 1860. Most of our country’s population lived in rural areas and personal and business travel was done by horse, buggy, stagecoach, or boat. It could take hours or days to get to your destination and even months to cross the country.

Home circles were started by those who were excited by the news of the New Dispensation in Hydesville and wanted to witness it for themselves. Unable to devote the time or means to journey to distant lectures or demonstrations, they formed circles among family members and neighbors. They too were looking for answers to their feelings of isolation and detachment. How many spiritual connections were forged in the lowly home circles of the 1800’s?

The suggested number of sitters in a circle is from 3 to 6, however there are many examples of 2 individuals of like mind and intention having great success. There should be a commitment to day, time, and place of meeting, at a minimum of once per week for approximately one hour. A basic set of guidelines for a circle meeting can be found on page 2 of this newsletter.

While we are slowly moving back to normalcy, now may be the time to take a step forward in our commitment to our spiritual growth. Now may be the time to circle back to the tradition of a Home Circle, an excellent option to explore, even virtually on Zoom!

Basic Guidelines for a Home Circle

  • Set the time and date for the meeting and be consistent
  • Call the Circle to order, and open with a prayer that sets the intention
  • Send distant healing to those family and friends who are in need of help
  • Spend 10-15 minutes in silent meditation, focusing on being open to the voice of Spirit
  • Share the thoughts, feelings, or other things that were revealed during the meditation
  • End the Circle with a closing prayer, visualizing spiritual protection as each sitter withdraws their energy back within

“Spirit Circles, whether held in a home or church, historically have been the Spiritualist path for unfolding a person’s ability to communicate with those in the Spirit World.”

LET’S CRACK SOME EGGS

Across the world, the lowly egg has been the symbol of creation, rebirth, and fertility. The ancient beliefs of India, Egypt, and Greece all feature a common thread of attributing creation of the world to a ‘cosmic’ egg. Many cultures used eggs to promote agricultural success, even spreading eggs onto their plows prior to sowing the fields.

Today, eggs continue to appear in religious and cultural ceremonies around the world, as well as figuring in many commercial endeavors. Although they may have lost some of the mystique of past ages, there is still a fascination with the unknown that may lie within. This idea was given a unique representation by author, Siobhan Shaw. She wrote that eggs:

“… symbolize our ability to break out of the hardened, protective shell we’ve surrounded ourselves with that limits our thoughts and beliefs. As we break open our hearts and minds, we discover a transformation to new, life enhancing thoughts and beliefs.”

Who knew the egg could also represent the walls that we sometimes surround ourselves with? Whether by choice or circumstance, we are all victims of the barriers that we ourselves erect. They keep us from stepping outside the box, prevent spontaneity, and restrict our thoughts about what is possible.

When we open our hearts and minds to the infinite possibilities of this world and the next, we tap a hammer against that shell that restricts what our real achievements could be. We can be bold, bravely stepping forward, wielding a 19-lb sledgehammer; or, we can just start by tapping lightly with our knuckles. Each rap against this shell of restriction is another step on the journey of personal and spiritual discovery. Let’s get crackin’!

“There are certain things that we become cognizant of by observation and experience; there are other things that the soul sees intuitively, without experience or observation. The mind intuitively knows that time and space are infinite, though of course it has observed neither. It intuitively refers all things to a source, and analogy reminds it that an offspring is like the source whence it came. Whence came my soul into individual being? Being soul, it came out of soul; and as there are millions of similar souls, the inference is that they too came from soul, and intuition tells us that this source of all individual souls is universal and infinite… This sense of parentage of infinite soul is the most exquisite pleasure that the finite mind can experience… In this realization and its consequent ecstatic joy is the origin and foundation of real spirituality.”

THE ANNIVERSARY OF MODERN AMERICAN SPIRITUALISM

March 31, 1848 has been designated as the day of celebration for the advent of Modern American Spiritualism. Our worldwide, scientific movement of recognition and investigation of the documented communication with those who live in the Spirit World began on this day in the humblest of beginnings. The two youngest Fox sisters (Margaretta and Catherine) recognized the attempts at communication for what they were and responded to the murdered peddler, Charles B. Rosna. Thanks to the Fox family’s selfless efforts, along with the many who assisted them, a bridge was built and a beachhead established between this physical plane and the spiritual plane.

The fourth Sunday in March is recognized as Gratitude Day, honoring all of our founders and forebearers that have paved the pathway for our collective spiritual journeys; Swendenborg, Mesmer, Andrew Jackson Davis, Mother Ann Lee, Isaac and Amy Post, Emma Hardinge Britten, Harrison Barrett, W. J. Colville, James Peebles, Cora Richmond, and Hudson Tuttle to name just a few. Many, many people have given their time, risked their reputation, and sacrificed in different ways to build the foundation of the Religion of Spiritualism.

We are fortunate to live in a country where true freedom of religion is constitutionally mandated. Even so, there are still prejudices and animosities to be confronted. Our duty as Spiritualists is to remain steadfast in the knowledge base our pioneers started for us, building upon this foundation as our understanding of Natural Law and the Spirit World evolves. Thanks to them, this Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism is still going strong 173 years later.

“Spiritualism is a no-fault religion, affirming man to be an evolving soul, seeking new avenues of expression, in this and other advanced dimensions of life.”

-Wilbur Hull

“Spiritualism does not create truth, but is a living witness to the truth of a future existence. It reveals it – demonstrates it, describing its inhabitants – their occupations and characteristics. Spiritualism, originating in God who is Spirit, and grounded in man’s moral nature, is a substantial fact, and infinitely more – a fact plus reason and conscience; a fact relating to moral and religious culture – a sublime spiritual truth ultimating in consecration to the good, the beautiful, and the heavenly. Spiritualism – a grand, moral, science, and a wisdom religion – proffers the key that unlocks the mysteries of the ages.”

I ask the Great Unseen Healing Force to remove all obstructions from my mind and body and to restore me to perfect health.

I ask this in all sincerity and honesty and I will do my part.

I ask this Great Unseen Healing Force to help both present and absent ones who are in need of help and to restore them to perfect health.

I put my trust in the love and power of God.

“One thing: you have to walk, and create the way by your walking; you will not find a ready-made path. It is not so cheap, to reach to the ultimate realization of truth. You will have to create the path by walking yourself; the path is not read-made, lying there and waiting for you. It is just like the sky: the birds fly, but they don’t leave any footprints. You cannot follow them; there are no footprints left behind.”

-Osho Rajneesh, mystic (1931-1990)

FAITH, RELIGION & ROCK-N-ROLL

When we declare our Spiritualist Principles, why do we say ‘believe’ in three of them and ‘affirm’ in the other six? To have belief or faith that something is true or a fact requires confidence and acceptance that the ‘something’ exists. To ‘affirm’ an idea or statement is to state it as a fact, undisputable and undeniable.

Through our Principles, the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism is communicated to the world. We ‘believe’ in Infinite Intelligence, whose existence is expressed through the physical and spiritual phenomena of Nature. We ‘believe’ that the Golden Rule is the best way to demonstrate humanity’s moral obligation to one another. We ‘affirm’ that the existence and identity of each individual survives physical death, as validated through evidential mediumship. Our affirmations also include the need for understanding and following the Natural Laws that dictate our experience in this world and the next. We also confidently declare (or ‘affirm’) that reformation, prophecy, and healing are all available to any individual who puts in the effort that leads to spiritual growth and progression.

What does all this have to do with Rock and Roll? Any band’s success (rock or otherwise) is dependent upon its members believing in, having faith in, and having an intrinsic knowing of their own ability, as well as their bandmates. Any lack of confidence or hesitation can result in a train wreck! Have you ever heard beginning sixth grade band practice? Oh, the cacophony of noise that can be produced by players each searching for the right note on their musical journey.

The Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism provides us with a pathway to progression and enlightenment; guided by our Principles, evolving as our understanding of Natural Law grows, we can achieve unity with Infinite Intelligence and Spirit.  Music is a creative universal language expressing the harmony, tempo, and rhythm of life; our Spiritualist Principles are the Spirit inspired expression of the hymns within each of our own souls, attuning us to the Divine.

“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.” – Kahlil Gibran

Sunlight and Shadows

“The shadows in every man’s life make the sunshine more welcome. The tears are the dewdrops on the mountains of possibility, and the smiles are like the perfume to the sick and weary soul. Therefore, send forth the sunlight; do not be ashamed of the tears, and always smile when some heart is sad.

You never know what good a warm handclasp, a kind look, or a word may be to the despondent one. There is sunshine enough for all; and if you can be instrumental in brushing away the cobwebs from some poor disheartened sister’s or brother’s eyes, so they may discern the beautiful – which is their own God-given inheritance – you will have moved a step nearer to the Perfect Life, and your soul will vibrate with a something which only a few men have known.”

HUMOR

“Laughter is a sunbeam of the soul”. – Thomas Mann

Many of us have spent the last year of pandemic isolation dedicating part of our day to ‘binge’ watching TV shows (come on, admit it!). A true classic of a binge watch is The Golden Girls. This show aired for 7 seasons (1985-1992) and 180 episodes. What is striking is how much societal and cultural uncertainty and questions haven’t really changed much in the last 36 years.

The Golden Girls writers, producers, and actors were unafraid of head-on challenges to society’s prejudices or misunderstandings. Justice and equality, religion and politics, love and family, race, disability, and even LGBTQ issues were given voice and confronted equally with compassion, growth, and always, always with humor.

The ability to laugh during times of stress and turmoil cannot be overvalued. How many times have you been in a stressful situation; tension so thick, like a cloud of doom. Suddenly, someone cracks a joke, and it’s like the balloon popped. All the tension drains away and immediately the room is lighter. Laughter frequently opens the door to answers and commonalities that didn’t seem to exist before.

This is what happens when we incorporate our Principles into our daily life. For example, remembering the Golden Rule helps to remove our ego from any situation. By treating others as we would like to be treated ourselves, we pull our dog from the fight. For just a moment we give ourselves the opportunity to gain a new perspective. An insight that looks from the outside to the inside, and maybe recognizes a potential for humor, and just possibly enlightenment.

Many of us have been thrust into situations this past year (and throughout life) that could either result in crying or laughing. We need to keep humor at the top of the list of possible responses to difficult circumstances; it lowers the temperature, fosters amicability, and makes our ego take a step back. This change of attitude acknowledges our mutual commonalities on this earthly journey. Thanks for the reminder, ‘Girls’! (Bea, Rue, Betty, and Estelle)

Wisdom of the Brahmins

“It is not blessedness to know

That thou thyself art blest;

True happiness is not by one

Nor yet by two possessed.

Not to the many is it given

But only to the all;

The joy that leaves one soul unblest

Would be for mine too small;

And he that has this ardent hope

Will strive with earnest soul,

To work out his own proper good,

By working for the whole.”

From, Remember the Hydesville Peddler

by Ben F. Hayden

“While we are all perfectly familiar with the names of Margaret and Katy Fox, how many of us are familiar with the name Charles B. Rosna, the poor murdered peddler, whose physical life was snuffed out, and his body buried in the cellar of that Hydesville Cottage? Charles B. Rosna, the defleshed immortal spirit, stood on the invisible side of life and gave to these little girls the knowledge that he, though destroyed in the physical, still survived in the spirit; that knowledge is so full of blessings for all the human race which is destined to banish all skepticism and infidelity from the minds of men; comforting the mourner with angelic consolations; lifting up the unfortunate, the outcast, the inebriate, and taking away the sting of death which has kept mankind under bondage through fear, so that now death to its millions of believers is but the kind and gentle servant who unlocks with noiseless hand life’s flower encircled door, to show us those we loved.”

LIVING FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW

In the book Mediumship, author and medium Ida Pimm wrote that we could picture our human consciousness like a tall, towering building. She goes on to observe that most people live their entire life on the ground floor, consumed by the demands of this physical experience. That’s easy to do isn’t it? With errands to run, appointments to keep, dinner to make, and so on; we get so tied up with the day-to-day challenges and routines that we sometimes forget that we have an obligation to ourselves to maintain our upward trajectory of knowledge and growth.

Our duty as individual, spiritual beings is to gain the knowledge necessary to move forward towards harmony with the Divine. All of our thoughts and actions (mental, moral, and spiritual) either move us one step closer or, perhaps, one step further away. Whether conscious or unconscious, the decisions we make move us up or down the stairwell of Ida Pimm’s building, closer to or further from attunement with Infinite Intelligence.

As we invest time in our spiritual pursuits, we start climbing that staircase. Meditation, prayer, contemplation, classes, and study all prepare us for the ascent. The reward is the unfoldment of our eternal, spiritual being. Remember, progression made here on the Earth plane translates to the Spirit World upon our transition.

One of the positives to come out of this pandemic lockdown is the proliferation of Zoom and other internet activities designed to help attain this spiritual advancement. There are countless opportunities to experience other church services, attend development circles, take classes, and just explore the wonderful world of Spiritualism. Let’s take a moment and make that commitment to ourselves; make a pledge with Spirit to adopt a learning mindset devoted to our growth and evolution. We are worth the investment!

Staircase of Faith

We get lost on the lower steps of the staircase

With heavy hearts and tired minds

Jaded souls and eyes that blind

But there is a profusion of potential on that climb

The picture doesn’t unfold all at once

Each step up inspires something newly visible to you

Trust in what is hidden

In the verses of sublime scriptures and skies

And the translucent ties that gently bind

Have faith in what is clouded and unseen

And know that where you are now is where you are meant to be

“Don’t’ feel bad about feeling bad. Don’t be frightened of feeling afraid. Don’t be angry about being angry. There is no need to give up when we are feeling depressed. Nor should we be dismayed at the grief which often accompanies the outgrowing of anything which needs outgrowing. We can be glad that our soul is speaking to us and pushing up onwards. We frequently need to persevere with a period of inner turmoil before the dust can settle and be swept out the door.”

LIVING FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW

Selections from Arcana of Spiritualism by Hudson Tuttle (1900)

“I love to contemplate the future life, with all its grand possibilities, by which the spirit, however dwarfed by the accidents of time and place, may outgrow all deformities and become beautiful as a dream of loveliness. Over there, sad heart, is the joy which knows no sorrow; over there, pilgrim wandering in the falling shadows, is the light which is never obscured by clouds; over there, when the heat and burden of the day is done.”

“But more attractive is the fact that this earthly life is a part of that future – its beginning, the embryo from which it is evolved. We are spirits now as much as we shall be after the separation from the mortal body. Death can work no change in our being; only in our condition. We remain the same. We have stepped out of the old garments; we have ascended another rung in the ladder of life; the bird of song has escaped from the broken bars of its cage, but its voice is unchanged.”

“Life is continuous, and the future is the prolongation of this. There is no break, and the spirit carries forward into the next life all its attainments, intellectual, moral, and spiritual. ..We are weaving day by day the raiment of our celestial being, and laying up treasures which will meet and bless us. Like the fabled ash in ‘Norse Mythology,’ this life of ours strikes its roots down into the foundations of the earth and its branches arise into the glory of the celestial spheres.”

“We are to build on earth, but to build for heaven…We are not acting for time, but for eternity, and we should consider that every act has a two-fold relation: to the present and to the future. Whatever has relation to that future being, in developing nobility, magnanimity, devotion to right, justice, and truth, fraternity, and the love which exceeds understanding, reflecting as it must on the character of the present, is of infinitely more worth than the fleeting objects of the hour.”

Change

Everything you see before you,

Whether houses, books or clay,

Is slowly but surely changing –

Rotting, wearing, or rusting away.

It is change, change, change ever,

No matter where you look –

From the shining stars above you,

To the moss by the babbling  brook.

And your soul is ever on the change,

It, too, moves with the rest,

Either down the hill of misery,

Or higher toward the blessed.

But this Eternal Change is not by chance –

Filled up with many flaws.

No. Each thing moves in its proper course,

In harmony with Natural Laws.

SPIRITUAL FUEL

“What drains your spirit drains your body. What fuels your spirit fuels your body.”

– Carolyn Myss

During this time of stress, frustration, and fear for so many of us, our mental attitude has never been more important. As the Reverend Vicky Homann has always reminded us, “Thoughts are things,” meaning that we have a significant role in creating the reality in which we live this physical life. Just as we feed our physical body the sustenance it needs in the form of food, we have to feed our spiritual body the nourishment required for its’ growth and expansion.

Meditation, contemplation, and prayer are all good building blocks for a healthy spiritual foundation. Fellowship with other like-minded people through church services, development circles, or other activities expand our viewpoint and stretch our sense of the possible. Thanks to the Internet we have a world of resources available at our fingertips. Here are a few:

– nsac.org – our parent organization’s website; also check the NSAC Facebook page for the calendar of upcoming events and weekly services and circles

-morrispratt.org – The Morris Pratt Institute provides educational and credentialing opportunities as well as a bookstore and library

– iapsop.com – The International Association for the Preservation of Spiritualist and Occult Periodicals; this webpage has links to most of the many Spiritualist periodicals of the past

– archive.org – Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of books available for free digital download, type in ‘Spiritualism’ and see what comes up!

– snu.org.uk – The Spiritualists National Union, the organizing body of Spiritualist in Great Britain; also, check out their YouTube channel

– theisf.com – The International Spiritualist Federation

Body and soul work in concert, fed by the effort we put in to both feeding and exercising our physical body as well as our spirit. The dedication and consistency we put forth in this effort will pay dividends for eternity.

One Lonely Hour

Thou must go on alone, my soul,

Thou must go on alone;

The future, what it holds, my soul,

Is, kindly, yet unknown.

Thou knowest all things end, my soul,

The evil and the good;

The way results will come, my soul,

Is not yet understood.

Thou canst but do thy best, my soul,

Thy best and nothing more.

The things thou failest to gain, my soul,

‘Tis useless to deplore.

Thou must drift on alone, my soul,

No anchorage for thee;

Thou sailest soundless seas, my soul,

Through all eternity.

REFORMATION

Principle 8: We affirm that the doorway to reformation is never closed against any soul here or hereafter.

The use of the word ‘reformation’ is a very specific choice by our Spiritualist founders and by the spirit entities that inspired our Principles. It sets up a conceptual contrast with the Christian concept of ‘redemption’, or salvation from sin. Reformation, whether of an individual or a society, reveals the upward progression of growth and progress toward a state of higher union with Infinite Intelligence. As Spiritualists, we reject the idea of eternal damnation for whatever the current concept of ‘sin’ is.

The moral responsibility as individuals, affirmed in our 7th Principle, serves as the foundation for our own reformation, dependent upon our understanding of Natural Law. As we traverse this physical journey, making mistakes along the way, we are constantly in the process of transformation and renewal. This is on-the-job training, but without the threat of being fired if we fail. We have the ultimate safety net: the infinite love of the Divine that has the capacity to allow us to overcome and grow beyond all of our shortcomings.

The key to this is our pursuit of spiritual growth, spearheaded through prayer and meditation. Joan Chittister, an American Benedictine nun and author, wrote, “Prayer that is regular confounds both self-importance and the wiles of the world. It is so easy for good people to confuse their own work with the work of creation. It is so easy to come to believe that what we do is so much more important that what we are. It is so easy to simply get too busy to grow.”

As we go forward, day-to-day, it’s vital that we consciously stop and take the time for our own reformation. The doorway is open; it is up to each of us to step across that threshold through mindful dedication to our eternal future.

“Spiritualism teaches the immortality of the soul;

it teaches a personal future life;

it teaches the return of spirits to minister to

and to communicate with mortals, and to watch over them;

it teaches that the life on earth forms the basis of the coming life,

and that every deed and thought in earthly life

you reap the reward or penalty of in your own nature or spirit;

it teaches all that can be taught to the present race

concerning the nature of man’s soul, its past and its future.

…It does not limit the possibilities of the knowledge of man

concerning the material or the spiritual universe.”

EVIDENTIAL MEDIUMSHIP

“Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.” – Rabindranath Tagore

“Spiritualism is the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication, by means of mediumship, with those who live in the

Spirit World.”

The dawn of realization for each of us is different, but for Spiritualists, it usually begins to unfold when we encounter our first evidential mediumship event. Were we invited to a Spiritualist Church by a friend? Did we seek out people with kindred beliefs for what we knew in our hearts was possible? Were we looking for answers to questions that seemed to be unanswerable? Or, were we looking for relief from grief and sadness?

Whatever motivation brought us to this Religion of Spiritualism, we all share a common experience: our individual reaction to that moment when we first realize that someone we knew was communicating with us. Shock, tears, happiness, relief, all of the emotions that can be experienced in that precious instant that confirms the presence of a loved one and, by extension, the existence of the Divine.

There are four fundamental purposes behind the demonstration of evidential mediumship in Spiritualist Churches:

– Mediumship demonstrates the continuity of life and the survival of personal identity

– Mediumship offers solace and comfort to those left behind

– Mediumship removes the potential fear of death

– Mediumship aids in the unfoldment of the recipient

These purposes reveal a sacred partnership, forging our connection with Infinite Intelligence and confirming our commitment to serving Spirit in this physical incarnation. We are eternal beings, transporting the spark of the Divine within each of us. Evidential Mediumship reminds us of our origin and of our destination.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence;

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less traveled by.

And that has made all the difference.

FOUNDERS DAY

January 25 is observed in our Spiritualist calendar as the day we recognize the establishment
of the Children’s Progressive Lyceum by Andrew Jackson Davis in 1863. Davis is often referred
to as the ‘John the Baptist’ of Modern Spiritualism as his many works form much of the
foundation of our religion. An extraordinary trance medium, both seer and prophet, he
dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. His vision of children in the Spirit
World continuing to further their education in an organized manner led him to found the Lyceum
at Dodsworth Hall in New York City.
The Lyceum developed over time and included adults as well; learning is the ultimate goal for
everyone, here on the physical plane and after transition in the Spirit World. Our progression
as individual, eternal beings does not stop with age or state of life; and Spiritualism itself does
not remain static either, but evolves like we do, as understanding and knowledge of Natural Law
grows.
On this day we also recognize the many who, along with Davis, paved the way for what we now
know as Modern American Spiritualism. Swedenborg and Mother Ann Lee, the Fox Family and
Charles Rosna, Harrison D. Barrett and Emma Hardinge Britten; the list is long. All of our
pioneers and founders understood the value and necessity of spirit communication. The message
that Spiritualism brings to humanity of love, light, and law continues.

“We honor the names of all the pioneers of Spiritualism who were drawn from every walk of life
and composed an earnest coterie and exclusive group of people educated in liberalism in religion,
in the principles of democracy, in the emancipation of women, in the shining understanding that
Spirit speaks to us through the channels of our own soul and not through the channels of narrow
religious bigotry.” – NSAC Religious Services Manual

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamonds glint on snow.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you waken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uprising rush

I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;

WHAT IS SPIRITUALISM?

How do you answer that question when asked? Do you know how to explain/describe our Religion
of Spiritualism? Harrison D. Barrett (1863-1911) served seven years as the editor of the
Spiritualist newspaper, Banner of Light, and was the first President of the National Spiritualist
Association – the precursor to the NSAC. He answered the question in his essay, What is
Spiritualism:
“It gives us the phenomena, the science, the philosophy; which, when blended into oneness, gives
to the world at last a religion that is probable both by induction and deduction, by scientific
demonstration and spiritual revelation. It is a religious science and scientific religion, a religious
philosophy and a philosophical religion. It gives to the world knowledge of the future, and has no
negatives or speculations to offer to those who investigate its sublime teachings. The
theologian and Christian say, I believe; the agnostic says, I don’t know, while the materialist
affirms annihilation of man’s consciousness at the change called death. Spiritualism has one
answer to all these speculations, and in two words solves the difficult problem of humanity,
saying, I know.”
Spiritualism is the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of continuous life, demonstrated by
evidential mediumship, following the Natural Law that rules this world and the next. It is a
religion of knowing.

From each a mystic silence Love demands.
What do all seek so earnestly? ‘Tis Love.
What do they whisper to each other? Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts.
In Love no longer ‘thou’ and ‘I’ exist,
For Self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul,
Behold the Friend; Incomparable Love.

Will find the secret of them both, is Love.

FOCUS

Maintaining focus is a challenge for our modern times and that difficulty surely seems to have
increased dramatically in the last 12 months. Between news updates, social media, friends, and
family, we are constantly barraged with a shotgun spray of pellets all seeking our attention.
What do we do? How do we combat the gnats flying around our heads?
Principle #7 defines our personal responsibility as individuals and part of that burden is what
we allow to occupy our attention. Are we busy watching cat videos on YouTube? Not that there
is anything wrong with cat videos per se, but we can’t allow ourselves to get sucked down the
rabbit hole of instant electronic convenience. Commitment and dedication are required for
spiritual growth and unfoldment; focus is a critical component of both. Our Religion of
Spiritualism is very individually participatory in its nature. As such, we each must allocate time
and focus for prayer, meditation, development, and communion.
Practicing focus while engaging in these activities requires single-minded attention to the
exercise at hand. An example of this occurred during the 1957 World Series. Yogi Berra was
the catcher and Hank Aaron was up to bat. Berra noticed that Aaron was holding the bat the
wrong way round. “Turn the bat around so you can see the trademark,” he advised Aaron. Hank
Aaron’s attention was firmly focused on the pitcher’s mound. “Didn’t come up here to read, came
up here to bat,” he replied. What an excellent reminder to literally ‘keep your eye on the ball’.
The best way for us to try and increase our ability to focus on our own spiritual development is
to simply practice; dedicate time every day just as we would to practicing an instrument or to
our daily chosen physical exercise. As with any activity, practice breeds proficiency, and
proficiency brings astounding progress.
“Attention is a resource as abundant as sunlight. It streams outward all day long whether we
choose to tap into it or not. By developing conscious focus of our attention, we learn to harness
one of the greatest creative powers available to humankind, one that happens to be freely
available within ourselves at all times.” –Scott Edmund Miller

Ode to 2021

As time draws nigh to the ending of the year,
Our hearts fill with gladness, laughter, and cheer,
And anticipation for what the New Year will bring.
We drink to be merry and then we all sing.
It’s out with the old and in with the new,
It’s all about me and it’s all about you.
The choices we made on things left behind
And lessons we take to better mankind.
Let us all practice and be the change that we need
And live life harmoniously in thought, word, and deed.
No better way for a New Year to start
Than with a positive attitude and a kind, loving heart.
To be mindful of our actions and with compassion as our creed,
Practice thoughtful acts of kindness and generous good deeds.

A NEW BEGINNING

“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

– L. Frank Baum

Each New Year on this physical plane provides the opportunity for a ‘new beginning’, hence the New Year’s resolution tradition for implementing change in the coming year. But, in reality, each new day offers the same opportunity for change. Look back at all that has happened over the last 365 days. Change comes in all shapes and sizes; from tragic loss of a loved one that has affected so many in 2020, to losing jobs, reinventing careers, and adding new family members through birth or adoption of little furry companions. Of course these are things that happen in any given year, but perhaps not with the frequency and division of this past 12 months.

Our Spiritualist Principle #8 states that the doorway to reformation is never closed against any soul here or hereafter. This opportunity for reformation doesn’t wait to start at our time of transition to the Spirit World; it dawns with every new day we spend on this earth plane. The growth and progress we make here entails change and, sometimes, starting over. It can be difficult and scary, but true personal growth typically requires effort, diligence, and sacrifice.

Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh writes, “At any moment, you have a choice, that either leads you closer to your spirit or further away from it”.  By embracing change, instead of running away from it, we step through the doorway, whether for reformation, opportunity, or both. Moment by moment we can choose growth or stagnation, awareness or ignorance in our interactions with each other and with Spirit.

Dorothy’s statement to Toto was correct; this isn’t the world it once was, but it is the stage on which we all have our part to play. The Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism embraces the Natural Law of evolution of the individual and of the world. It gives us the confidence that this path of unfoldment is the right one, in the right place, at the right time for all of us who call Spiritualism our home.

“If we believe that there is a life after death of the physical body; that that life is an infinite prolongation and evolution of this; that the spirit remains unchanged in being, changed only in conditions; that it may hold intercourse with those in this life, we are Spiritualists.

If we believe that this view of nature carries with it the highest, purest, and most practical system of morals; that it is the basis of true religion, expressed in the loftiest phases of self-forgetfulness in helping others, in noble living from the cradle to the grave, we are Spiritualists.

If we refer the fleeting changes we call creation, from the expanding bud to the revolving sun, to force, which thus being made cognizant in matter, carries with it as a corollary that it is intelligent, loving and wise, planning for a purpose, and pursuing a well-defined course to an end pre-determined, so pre-determined that even man with his finite mind often can calculate what it must be; if we place this power, which is spirit, it its infinite expression; then we are Spiritualists.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR

As the New Year approaches, this is the perfect time for reflection on the choices and actions we have made during the last 12 months. Did we choose to act with kindness and consideration? Did we follow the route that led us further along the path to spiritual development? Did we travel consciously aware of our physical and spiritual experiences this year?

It’s easy to get caught up in the hectic nature of work, family, and life in general, especially as challenging as this last year has been! The importance of taking time for our own spiritual unfoldment and practice cannot be overstated. Now, as ever before, contemplation, prayer, and meditation lead to accountability and personal growth.

This is what makes Spiritualism a daily walk. Not just a theology for Sunday, but a religion of knowing and conviction expressed through our 9 Principles. These 9 Principles, evolving as our understanding of Natural and Spiritual Law grows, instruct and inform us in our ideal attitude, conduct, and goals.

We are all eternal spiritual beings sharing this journey of discovery and advancement. Our shared ambition is also our individual mandate, expressed in Principle 7.

We affirm the moral responsibility of individuals and that we make our own happiness or unhappiness as we obey or disobey Nature’s physical and spiritual laws.

Let’ all take a moment before the New Year dawns and dedicate ourselves not to the past, but to the bright future lying in front of us, awaiting our creation.

”We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day”

HOLIDAY SPIRIT

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”

– Hamilton Wright Mabie

This is the time of year that softens even the hardest of hearts; the decorations, music, presents, and goodwill wear down some of the biggest curmudgeons, just look at Scrooge McDuck and the Grinch! The holiday season brings to the forefront the importance of fellowship, family, and our commitment to each other universally. We know that each of us carry the spark of the Divine within, sharing this human experience and all of its many challenges. This is the time to take a moment and acknowledge our shared joys and struggles, our common adversities in these troubled times, and the universal prayer for peace, love, and acceptance.

The writer Agnes M. Pharo described the holiday season as a time of, “…tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.” May we all embrace the host of positive prayers and hopes of our fellow eternal beings, recognize the gifts of Spirit in our daily life, and strive even harder to gain greater compassion for each other and greater understanding of Natural Law.

SPIRITUALISM

The teachings and beliefs of any religious movement are vital elements leading to understanding of its role in the everyday life of its followers. As Spiritualists, we know that we strive to understand and comply with the physical, mental, and spiritual laws of nature. This incorporates our religion into every moment, making it much more than a one-day-a-week event; it becomes a way of life.

The religion of Spiritualism encourages the growth of the individual by placing the responsibility of all actions within each individual’s compliance with Natural Law. Our purpose here is to progress and grow, acknowledging that our soul does not die with the physical body, but is co-eternal with Infinite Intelligence. Communication with the Spirit World by means of mediumship is the foundation of Modern Spiritualism and our personal responsibility extends to the development and unfoldment of each person’s spiritual abilities. This communication removes the fear of death, proves the continuity of life, and provides comfort for the bereaved who are mourning the physical absence of a loved one.

Through prayer and meditation we raise our vibrations, joining in communion with friends and family who have passed beyond the veil, as well as our guides, teachers, doctors, chemists, and healers.  Spiritualism is a hands-on religion and our effort is rewarded by the knowledge that we share a positive, forward-looking, forward-thinking, ever-evolving philosophy.

“A dual body implies dual consciousness; and careful thinkers have been compelled to admit what they term the sub-consciousness is really the consciousness of the Spiritual or Etheric body. We find that mediumship, as a condition, is the evolution of the spiritual senses and in action is the use of these senses stimulated by Spirit persons. We find also that the energy manifest in mediumship is the same that carries on all the processes of organic life. Mediumship brings us to the very core of life itself and leaves us no definition of Spiritualism but this: ‘It is the science and philosophy of life.’”   – J.S. Loveland

ILLUMINATION

“Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth you have for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unlock and set me free.” – Clara H. Scott (1895)

The hymn, ‘Open My Eyes’, is a popular one in Spiritualist churches. Written in 1895, it remains one of the timeless reminders of our personal duty to our own awakening. These opening lines set the stage for the revelations that will follow. With our eyes open we progress in this physical world invested and engaged with everyone and everything around us; we must remain open to experiences that present opportunity for spiritual growth.

“Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth you send so clear; and while the message sounds in my ear, everything false will disappear.”

Open ears are required to hear the quiet voice of Spirit competing for our attention. When we enter the quiet of meditation and attune with Spirit, we partner together for growth and understanding. All of the false narratives of the physical world fade away.

“Open my mouth, and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere; open my heart, and let me prepare love with your children thus to share.”

When we open our heart to the reality and comfort of spiritual attunement, the truth of Infinite Intelligence and Natural Law are revealed, as well as our own nature as eternal beings. We share this revelation in our services through evidential mediumship, bringing forth the truth to all who are open to it.

Therein lies the key; Clara Scott reminds us of the methods we use to receive and transmit knowledge, but it is up to us to remain open, willing, and committed participants in the process.

To paraphrase, Open my eyes, open my ears, open my heart, and illumine me, Spirit divine!

-Jennifer Rosson, LM

GRATITUDE

Gratitude: “The quality of being thankful and the readiness to share appreciation for and to return kindness.” – Oxford Languages

“Have an attitude of gratitude!” How many times have we heard that phrase? How often have we given thought to what it actually means? Gratitude is fundamentally different than being thankful. Being thankful is specific to something we have received; being grateful links thankfulness with the ability and willingness to pay the received kindness forward to others.

The concept of gratitude acknowledges the divine origin of all forms of life in this physical existence. We express this in our Second Principle: “We believe that the phenomena of Nature, both physical and spiritual, are the expression of Infinite Intelligence”. While we may individually face hardship and challenges, we can also share our gratitude for this physical experience with one another, extending love, comfort, and kindness to our fellow humans. Thomas Merton explained this form of gratefulness as recognizing the love of God in everything, that every breath is a gift of God’s love, every moment of existence a gift of grace.

We have a conscious choice to make in our day-to-day interactions: do we focus on what we lack, or what others have and we do not? Or, do we recognize the abundance we already possess. A Cherokee proverb tells the story of the two wolves that battle inside each of us; one is ego driven, arrogant, selfish, etc. and the other is guided by love, kindness, humility, etc. Which one wins? The one you feed, of course.

Being grateful is a mindset, it can be practiced and become a sustaining principle of our eternal being. It embraces Natural Law, principally the Law of Love, expressed for one another and ourselves. This holiday season let us remember to project an attitude of gratitude for all of the wondrous expressions of Infinite Intelligence that exist on this earth plane.

“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.”  – William Arthur Ward

MORRIS PRATT INSTITUTE

11811 Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee, WI

The Morris Pratt Institute (MPI) was incorporated on December 11, 1901 and opened on September 29, 1903 with Moses Hull as its’ first Principal. Like any longstanding educational institution it has undergone numerous changes and ups and downs through the years, but one thing has never changed and that is its close affiliation with the NSAC. The MPI thirty-lesson correspondence course on Modern American Spiritualism provides the educational requirements for the NSAC credentials of Commissioned Healer, Certified Medium, Licentiate Minister, National Spiritualist Teacher, and Ordained Minister.  In addition, MPI coordinates the 2-week residential Ministerial Skills course, numerous workshops, and maintains an extensive research library that is available to the public.

Spiritualists are not the only ones taking advantage of the educational opportunities available at MPI; students from around the world and from numerous disciplines are actively involved in study at MPI. You don’t have to be interested in gaining an NSAC credential to benefit from the knowledge that can be gleaned from the courses and workshops; it is an investment in our spiritual development and understanding of the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism.

INFINITE INTELLIGENCE

“We believe in Infinite Intelligence.”

(NSAC Declaration of Principles, #1)

As Spiritualists we refer to the omnipotent, omnipresent, creative force of the Universe as ‘Infinite Intelligence’ and many of us use this terminology interchangeably with ‘God’. But why the different terminology, and what is the difference?

The God concept for many orthodox religions is personal and anthropomorphic in nature, having many human characteristics.  This inevitably led to ‘God’ becoming the judge and jury in charge of punishment and reward based upon loyalty and obedience to the dogma established by the religious orthodoxy.

Spiritualists, however, understand that Infinite Intelligence is the constant, unchanging force reflected and revealed within the physical and spiritual worlds. We acknowledge that our finite minds are unable to comprehend the perfection expressed through the Natural Law that rules the Universe, and therefore we resist any attempt to assign dogmas or creeds that try to limit what is limitless in nature.

Infinite Intelligence manifests within each of us as well; we are individual, eternal spiritual beings having a physical experience, and as such we are all a part of Infinite Intelligence. Our existence is only limited by our ability to understand and comply with the Natural Laws that are the manifestation of Infinite Intelligence. We are not subject to the whims of a capricious deity; rather, we have the choice through free will to be personally responsible for our growth and development as spiritual beings. This concept of Infinite Intelligence is the very foundation of the Religion of Spiritualism.

“By this [Principle #1] we express our belief in a supreme Impersonal Power, everywhere present, manifesting as life, through all forms of organized matter, called by some, God, by others, Spirit and by Spiritualists, Infinite Intelligence.”

 – Joseph P. Whitwell, 3rd NSAC President

STRESS

“Stress level: extreme. It’s like she was a jar with the lid screwed on too tight, and inside the jar were pickles, angry pickles, and they were fermenting, and about to explode.”

          – Fiona Wood

How is your stress level? 2020 continues to be an extraordinary year of challenges and turmoil, pushing many of us to extreme reactions to all of the hurdles that keep appearing in front of our society. How we react to the external stimuli that surround us is directly related to our internal climate, which of course is a reflection of our relationship with Infinite Intelligence and Spirit.

Negativity is an easy emotion to embrace; righteous indignation and anger unite us into groups, empowering our consciousness to action. But, we all know that actions taken from a position of negativity and anger rarely produce changes that are positive in nature. Think about the example given us by Martin Luther King, Jr and his philosophy of nonviolent protest that lead to the positive result of the Civil Rights Bill being passed. He said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”.

As Spiritualists we understand the role of Natural Law, both in this world and the next. The Law of Attraction is easily witnessed in times like these, positively and negatively. Our duty is to remember our Spiritualist Principles and Philosophy that act as our roadmap for this physical existence of our eternal souls. Spirit gave Andrew Jackson Davis the direction for our journey: Behold, here is thy Magic Staff. Under all circumstances keep an even mind. Take it. Try it. Talk with it. Lean on it. Believe on it forever. Keeping an even mind is often a test of our character, but it also presents an opportunity for spiritual growth.

The Science of Spiritualism demonstrates the continuity of life and communicates our Philosophy based on Natural Law. Spiritualism as a Religion advocates our adherence to the physical, mental, and spiritual Laws of Nature. Our choices and actions here directly translate to our future existence in the Spirit World. These are truly times that challenge the breadth of character of our eternal souls; we need to take heart, stay positive, and keep our Spiritualist Principles forefront in our hearts and minds.

LIGHT

“Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”

                    – Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

When we awaken to the realization that this physical experience is but one step along our soul’s eternal journey, the ‘light’ does quite literally dawn. Our consciousness evolves in that moment of awakening, acknowledging the reality of our eternal existence. This fundamental shift changes everything within and without. Examples of this would include the internal monologue we have with ourselves, as well as the external interactions we have with each other.

We can be our own worst enemies and critics. The knowledge that the continuity of life is a fact has the ability to alter the harshness with which we tend to treat ourselves. This physical existence isn’t the end and we don’t have to expect to learn everything in this one limited lifetime. We do need to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented, but our learning and growth will continue when we make our transition to the Spirit World.

Taking this knowledge to heart lets us allow ourselves some latitude, and also grant that same grace to our fellow travelers. None of us is perfect and we all have bad days; it behooves us to remember that we do not know the troubled path another may be following. Allowing our own light to shine in our interactions with one another can open the door of possibility to someone who is seeking answers to their own questions and self-doubts.

Through evidential mediumship, Spirit messengers have graciously communicated the ‘fact’ of eternal life. Not based on belief or faith, but a fact, proven through the phenomena of Spiritualism. When this light dawns within our soul it is the ultimate game changer. We now ‘know’ that life continues onward in an eternal journey towards oneness with Infinite Intelligence.

THE ART OF LISTENING

Our world moves at such an accelerated pace, it seems that we routinely process things in a Twitter-like manner of 140 characters or less. The technology of text messages, Instagram, and Facebook are a two-edged sword; they keep us connected, but isolate us at the same time. We face losing the art and skill of interpersonal relations, especially the ability to actively listen to one another and perhaps learn something in the process. Father Thomas Dubay said, “The humble listen to their brothers and sisters because they assume they have something to learn. They are open to correction, and they become wiser through it”.

Hearing is a physical sense, listening is a skill that is developed over time. An old adage applies to our topic, it says that God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth because one of those parts is more important that the other! Active listening involves focus and concentration, using our minds to process the information being heard. The intent is important here also. We need to be listening to each other in order to understand the thoughts and feelings being expressed, not busy formulating what our response or come back is going to be.

Spirit communication is not any different. In order to attune with Spirit we must quiet and focus our mind, sitting in the power of silence.  It’s interesting to note that the words ‘listen’ and ‘silent’ are anagrams, or words that contain the same letters.  They are intimately linked in their genesis, listening inherently requires silence. This is why meditation is such an important component of attunement. Meditation focuses our attention and quiets our minds into silence, allowing us to hear the whispers from Spirit.

Principle 5 states: “We affirm that communication with the so-called dead is a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of Spiritualism”. Communication with the Spirit World is dependent upon our ability to ‘listen’ and be ‘silent’ for this wonderful blessing to occur. We can practice these skills every day with all of our interactions, truly listening to what our ears are hearing with the intention of understanding another.

Inner guidance is heard like soft music in the night by those who have learned to listen.”

TECHNOLOGY

Our world today is very different from the one most of us grew up in. Technology has transformed society, and the pandemic has shown us just how far that transformation has gone. It wasn’t that long ago that big discussions were being held on how our digital dependence had separated us from each other; now it’s the glue trying to hold us all together as friends, family, and society. Doctor visits are ‘virtual’; weddings, funerals, and graduations are streamed or done in a drive-by manner; and churches are ‘zooming’ services all over the world.

Our parent organization, the National Spiritualist Associations of Churches (NSAC), conducted what was to have been our convention in Phoenix utilizing this technology over the course of the last week. While the business part of the convention was postponed until next year, the educational, devotional, and social aspects of convention week translated well over the Zoom platform. Numerous classes, workshops, and services connected us all from Maine to California and beyond.

This was a wonderful opportunity to not only reconnect and see familiar faces, but to expand our knowledge and understanding of Spiritualism. This Zoom convention reminded us that we have an evolving Religion, one that is not bound by stale dogmas and traditions of the past, but responds to new revelations of science that expands our grasp of the Natural Laws that rule this physical world. Our Zoom convention exposed the truth in the old saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”.

Our society is very different from the one in which our founders lived, however we are still much the same. We value our own family and our church family. We honor our friendships and work hard at our careers. We evolve our thinking as scientific investigation reveals new understanding of Natural Law. We may be conducting all those things right now through technology our forebears could not have foreseen, but we are doing our best to find our path through this physical experience.

MEDIUMSHIP

“A Medium is one whose organism is sensitive to vibrations from the Spirit World and through whose instrumentality, intelligences in that world are able to convey messages and produce the phenomena of Spiritualism.” NSAC Spiritualist Manual

The term ‘mediumship’ refers to the unfoldment of an individual; the opening of one’s mind to the vibrations from the Spirit World and all of the wondrous ways it can be expressed. Physical mediumship is considered to be objective in nature because it can be directly observed by one of our physical senses. Mental mediumship is considered to be subjective in nature as the information received is subject to interpretation by the medium.

When we speak of the Phenomena of Spiritualism, this encompasses many forms of spirit communications (both physical and mental), including apports, automatic writing, clairaudience, clairsentience, clairvoyance, healing, levitation, materialization, psychometry, and trance. Spirit communication is an equal opportunity for anyone who wants to spend the time, open their mind, and devote themselves to their own unfoldment. Hudson Tuttle said, “It is a fundamental proposition that sensitiveness or the capability of mediumship is a faculty common to humans, differing in degrees as hearing and sight are common heritage but keener in some individuals than in others; or under certain conditions may disappear”.

Time spent in development class and in meditation helps to sharpen our acuity and our ability to attune with Spirit. It also helps to quiet our minds so we are able to hear the soft, subtle whispers from the other side.

“Our thoughts breathe the spiritual atmosphere of God’s imminence. Men have sought everywhere outside to find God, vainly neglecting the spiritual corridors of their profounder consciousness. As man thinks God-like thought and comes into deific conjunction, he also gains an increasing command of spiritual powers and prerogatives.”

THE COMFORT OF SPIRIT

The temperature outside aside, we have chronologically entered into the fall season on the calendar. While it may still seem like summer weather-wise, the fall holidays are rapidly approaching and subsequently the end of the year. And what a year this has been. Realizing that we still have three months left (and who knows what could happen next!), we must note that all of us have been juggling numerous challenges for months now with no end in sight.

Job and/or financial insecurities, health crises, questions about educational opportunities, and justice reform are but a few of the items many of us are facing all at the same time. The political climate adds one more layer of stress to the whole mess of 2020. As Spiritualists we know that the purpose of this physical existence is to learn, grow, and evolve as we are all eternal spiritual beings. As the old saying goes, challenges build character. It sure feels like we must all be just full of ‘character’ at this point.

We also know that life is continuous from this world to the next (Principle 4); evidence provided through the phenomena of Spiritualism has shown this to be a fact (Principle 5). Spirit is involved with us every day; our guides, teachers, and loved ones are with us during our joys and hardships, and during prayer and meditation. This knowledge helps alleviate some of the anxiety and worry that can overwhelm us during the trials we are all facing today. The next time news threatens to overtake your good humor, remember you are not alone in facing it; ask for assistance from those of us here, and from those who watch over us from the Spirit World.

“One of the deepest and most imperative cravings of the human heart, as it follows its beloved ones beyond the veil, is for some assurance that they still love and care for us. …They have overcome, have arisen, are crowned, glorified; but they still remain to us, our assistants, comforters, and in every hour of darkness their voices speak to us.”

NSAC DAY

September 27, 1893 is recognized as the founding date of the National Spiritualist Association (NSA) in Chicago, Illinois. Now known as the National Spiritualist Association of Churches (NSAC) we celebrate the history of our parent organization and show our gratitude to our pioneers on the fourth Sunday of September.

Our founders recognized the need to organize Modern American Spiritualism into the religion we know today. They understood the necessity to not only coordinate disparate groups, but to also protect mediums from arrest and prosecution. Harrison D. Barrett (our first President) and Mary (Mercy) Cadwallader formed the Medium’s Educational and Defense Fund for this purpose.

Through many annual conventions delegates from all over the country defined our religion and its goals. These landmark dates include:

1899 – Declaration of Principles 1 through 6

1909 – Declaration 7 and 8

1944 – Declaration 9

1914 – Definition of a Spiritualist

1914 – Definition of a Medium

1919 – Definition of Spiritualism

1919 – Definition of Spiritualism as a Science, Philosophy, and Religion

1930 – Definition of a Healer

1952 – Definition of the Phenomena of Spiritualism

Thankfully we live in a country that guarantees the freedom of religion to all of its citizens. Our pioneers and founders ensured that Modern American Spiritualism was recognized as a religion and they built our parent organization with the understanding of our obligation to show the world the truth of the continuity of life.

“As the sunflower turns its face to the light of the sun, so Spiritualism turns the face of humanity to the light of truth.”

FINDING STRENGTH IN OUR DIFFERENCES

“What nations have to realize is the guiding and helpful power of the spiritual world. All religions can agree on that great thesis, with whatever restrictions and minutiae it may be accompanied because of individual beliefs and sectarian prejudices. Let us unite in this enterprise of impressing the reality of the spiritual world and its active cooperation with us, and the outlook for the future becomes bright.”

          – Sir Oliver Lodge, at The World Fellowship of Faiths, 1933

The culture of humankind has suffered from division and conflict since the beginning. This fractious nature seems to be a global phenomenon; no area is safe from strife due to human interactions with one another. Due to communication through mediumship with the Spirit World, Spiritualists realize that this struggle does not occur beyond the veil; this is a human condition on this physical plane.

Sir Oliver Lodge recognized this, and urged us to look past the differences to see the similarities that we all share. Whether a person is a follower of Spiritualism, Christianity, Islam, or Judaism (or many others), there are shared aspects of each of our faiths built around the core belief in a supreme being who we call Infinite Intelligence (God). What better foundation to build relationships upon? Instead of concentrating on our differences and who we consider to be right or wrong, our time can be better spent in the practice of the universal axiom of the Golden Rule.

True strength evolves from the unification of divergent minds into a consensus that is good for the wellbeing of the whole. Today is as good a day as any to start a new mindset for this earth plane; thoughts are things, and intention leads to vibration, which leads to change.

I love you when you bow in your mosque, kneel in your temple, pray in your church. For you and I are sons of one religion, and it is the Spirit.”

LOOKING FOR GOD

There is an oft repeated moral story from an unknown source that goes something like this:

There was a little boy who wanted to meet God. He packed his backpack for the journey, including a good supply of Twinkies and apple juice. He arrived at the park and found an elderly woman sitting on a park bench. He sat down next to her and thinking that she looked hungry, he opened his backpack and offered her a Twinkie. Her face lit up with a beautiful smile and she took the Twinkie. The boy thought her smile was so pretty; he wanted to see it again. He offered her an apple juice, and again she smiled at him. They spent the afternoon eating Twinkies, drinking apple juice, and never spoke a word. Before he left, he gave the elderly woman a hug and she responded with her biggest smile ever.

When the boy arrived home, his mother asked why he seemed so happy. He answered, “I had lunch with God. She has the most beautiful smile I have ever seen.”

When the elderly woman arrived home, her son asked why she seemed so happy. She answered, “I had Twinkies in the park with God. He’s much younger than I expected him to be.”

Where do we find Infinite Intelligence? All around us; in everyone we meet and in all of nature that surrounds us. As Spiritualists we declare in Principle 2: “We believe that the phenomena of nature, both physical and spiritual, are the expression of Infinite Intelligence”. The divine spark resides within and without, whether we are on this physical plane or beyond the veil in the Spirit World. We have only to ‘open our eyes’, as the hymn says, to see the glimpses of God expressed in our daily lives.

“God is here, right now, at our side. We can see him in this mist, in the ground we’re walking on, even in my shoes. His angels keep watch while we sleep and help us in our work. In order to find God, you have only to look around.  – Paul Coelho

LABOR DAY

“Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” – Thomas Edison

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, paying tribute to and recognizing the hard work, contributions, and achievements of all American workers. Traditionally celebrated on the first Monday in September, it also marks the seasonal change from summer to fall and the beginning of the school year for many.

All of us are grappling with unprecedented circumstances this year that are challenging our patience, our good humor, and tolerance for one another. This change of season is a good time to remind ourselves of our 6th Principle: “We believe the highest morality is contained in the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Love and kindness propagate exponentially; a smile, a kind word, a small recognition of another’s effort is paid forward in ways we will never know. We need to be awake and conscious of our interactions, recognizing that we all are in the same struggle through uncharted territory.

This Labor Day, it is especially important to recognize the countless individuals working tirelessly on the front lines during this pandemic: doctors, nurses, emergency responders, grocery store clerks, food workers, truck drivers, and so many more. These dedicated people get up every day and put their own health on the line to serve the rest of us. Let us join together this Labor Day, take a moment, and say thank you to all of those who go about their daily duties with dedication and commitment in the face of adversity.

“It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.”

 – Helen Keller

HEAVEN

Principle 8: We affirm that the doorway to reformation is never closed against any soul here or hereafter.

Joseph P. Whitwell, our third NSAC President (1925-1944) wrote interpretations of our Principles for our Spiritualist Manual. For Principle 8 he wrote: “We discard entirely the terrible wrong and illogical teaching of eternal damnation, and in place thereof, we accept and present for consideration of thinking people the thought of the continuity of life beyond the change called death.” He continues by explaining that we lead a life according to Natural Law, and opportunities for growth and progress are available for everyone. There is no damnation, no hellfire or brimstone, but redemption is possible through our own actions, here or afterward in the Spirit World following our transition. No vicarious atonement by others; we are our own redeemers through our words and deeds.

We are also individually responsible for the concept of ‘heaven’; not a physical place with pearly gates, but a state of being in attunement with Infinite Intelligence. We do literally make our own ‘heaven’ or ‘hell’ by our conscious decisions and their consequences. Our Principles are our guidelines to live by and have real repercussions, both here and in the hereafter.

Princess Fallen Leaf’s Poem

Heaven is the place where God dwells within

Heaven is the place where all good begins

Heaven is the place where all blessings start

Heaven is the closest place to the heart

Heaven is the place where all fears cease

Heaven is the place where all is at peace

Heaven is the place where beauty abounds

Heaven is the place where harmony sounds

Heaven is the place where all men are free

Heaven is created by you and me.

NATURAL LAW

Natural Law encompasses the unchanging moral principles that we recognize as the basis for human conduct and are also the guiding force behind all of the physical phenomena of Nature. The NSAC website states that these laws are, “…immutable and constant, applying to everything and everyone without exception in both the physical and spiritual worlds… they are impartial, non-judgmental, automatic, impersonal, and are the underlying control of the universe, insuring progressive evolution”.

The concept of Natural Law has been around a long time. Greek philosophers including Aristotle and Plato, as well as the Roman philosopher, Cicero, all wrote of using reason to analyze human behavior and established guidelines of moral standards. Numerous other philosophers have written extensively on the subject, including Thomas Aquinas and Thomas Hobbes. Many of them used their Natural Law arguments as the reasoning behind challenging the powers that were in charge into making societal and government changes. This reasoning challenged the divine right of kings and was part of the argument used for our own Declaration of Independence.

Our duty as Spiritualists is to try and live up to the guidelines outlined in our principles; our 7th principle affirms that we have to live consciously in awareness of our relationship within all of Nature. One of the many Natural Laws is the Law of Freedom, the concept of free will. We have to be aware of our actions, for they affect not just ourselves, but others as well. Be alert to our thoughts, as the Rev. Vicky Homann always reminds us, ‘thoughts are things’; also known as the Law of Thought. In other words, we have to take ownership and responsibility for this physical life and our spiritual life to follow. The decisions and choices made today follow us into our future. We are the drivers of our own destiny.

“One can defy human laws, but cannot resist Natural Laws.”

THE RELIGION OF ‘KNOWING’

  1. Gordon Burroughs said that Spiritualism is “the religion of knowing, not the religion of faith”. In Becoming a Spiritualist he outlines what the Religion of Spiritualism enables us to do: “To walk in knowing consciousness with God; to listen to the beautiful choirs of ministering angels, our spirit people, living in the other dimension, human as we are, loving as we do, weeping sometimes as we weep, with their invisible hands reaching out to us watching, hoping, that we will catch the vibration that they are spiritually sending to guide us along the pathway of life. Not faith, not belief, but knowledge”.

The Religion of Spiritualism can be broken down into a shorthand version as, ‘love, light, and law’. The love of every being in the physical and the spiritual realm; light from the divine spark within us all and expressed through spirit communication; and Natural Law that governs our lives here and on the other side and provides answers we know to be true.

We live in uncertain times; many of us face difficult challenges and decisions that will have life changing consequences. How wonderful to confront these hurdles with the knowledge that we have the comfort and support of Spirit. Our guides, teachers, healers, and mentors from the spiritual realm are ready, willing, and more than able to assist us in navigating the path before us. It is vital that we spend time in prayer and meditation to raise our awareness and vibration, bringing ourselves into attunement with the spirit entities that are available to help encourage our growth and evolvement as spiritual beings.

“Seek then the kingdom of the quiet, the kingdom of relaxation, the kingdom of listening, the kingdom of peace, the kingdom of love; and the voice you will hear in that kingdom will be You speaking to you, which is God speaking to you. You become calmly, serenely associated with the entire universe. You will have heard His voice which becomes your guide, your help in the time of every need.”

SPIRITUAL SCIENCE DAY

Every year on the second Sunday of August the National Association of Spiritualist Churches (NSAC) celebrates Spiritual Science Day. This designation recognizes the ‘science’ aspect of the definitions of our religion: “Spiritualism is the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication by means of mediumship with those who live in the Spirit World” and, “Spiritualism is a Science because it investigates, analyzes, and classifies facts and manifestations demonstrated from the Spirit side of life.”

Many noted scientists have risked their reputations and careers by investigating the phenomena of the Spirit World. Sir William Crookes is credited with starting the ‘scientific period’ of Spiritualism; Sir Oliver Lodge investigated mediums Leonora Piper and Eusapia Palladino. Both men were noted early investigators that used the scientific method in their research of spirit phenomena. Their pioneering work is carried on today by organizations such as The American Society for Psychical Research (www.aspr.com), The Afterlife Research and Education Institute (www.afterlifeinstitute.org), and The Rhine Research Center (www.rhine.org).

Our support of these endeavors has never wavered; our objective is to prove to the world the truth of communication with those who live in the Spirit World through evidential mediumship. The brave men and women who continue these investigations deserve our gratitude, encouragement, and support.

SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION

“Spiritualism is a science, a philosophy, and a religion. It is not three things, but one thing with three aspects. So far as it deals with phenomena, it is a science. So far as is attempts to answer in the light of its generalizations built up from a study of its phenomena, the question, What is the real nature of the universe, and what is man’s relation to it? – it is a philosophy. So far as it deals with the individual soul, its nature and development in this life lived here and the kind lived beyond, it is a religion. It is a religious science and philosophy and a scientific and philosophical religion. As a religion it is based on the bedrock of sense impressions of phenomenal evidence. Its foundation is as firm and sure as are the foundations of astronomy and geology. It teaches a grandeur and beauty of soul development in the life beyond, undreamed of by any other religion. It satisfies every demand of the intellectual side of our nature and it likewise fulfills every requirement of the heart.”

INTENTION

Why am I a Spiritualist? Have you ever you asked yourself that question? We are all drawn to this Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism for different reasons initially, but over time realize we share many common intentions regarding our spiritual paths. The NSAC Manual describes the Objects of Spiritualism as:

– To teach the truths and principles expressed in the Declaration of Principles and in definition of Spiritualism, a Spiritualist, a Medium, and a Spiritualist Healer.

– To teach and proclaim the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Modern Spiritualism.

– To encourage lectures on all subjects pertaining to the spiritual and secular welfare of humanity.

– To protest against every attempt to compel humanity to worship God in any particular or prescribed manner.

– To advocate and promote spiritual healing.

– To protect and encourage spiritual teachers and mediums in all laudable efforts in giving evidence of proof to humanity of a continued intercourse [communication] and relationship between the living and the so-called dead [those who have made their transition to the Spirit World].

– To encourage every person in holding present beliefs always open to restatement as growing thought and investigation reveal understanding of new truths, thereby leaving every individual free to follow the dictates of reason and conscience in spiritual as in secular affairs.

These objects or intentions as quoted from our NSAC Manual describe our best choices for traveling our spiritual path in this physical existence. It is up to each of us to consciously make decisions that assist us in our evolution as spiritual beings. Our Principles and these Objects provide us with the outline necessary to realize our intentions and achieve our spiritual goals.

CONTINUITY OF LIFE

Principle 4. We affirm that the existence and personal identity of the individual continue after the change called death.

Principle 5. We affirm that communication with the so-called dead is a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of Spriitualism.                                                   (NSAC Manual)

The continuity of life from this physical existence to the spiritual realm is affirmed within our 4th and 5th Principles. The question is, have you given serious thought to what that actually means? The concept of immortality is almost as impossible for the human mind to grasp as the concept of Infinite Intelligence. Many great minds have dedicated serious time to both of these topics. One of our own Spiritualist mediums did as well.

Maud Lord Drake (1852-1924) was an extraordinary mental and physical medium demonstrating full materializations in daylight, independent voice, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and psychometry. She was twice invited to Buckingham Palace to give private readings to Queen Victoria. In 1904 her book, Psychic Light, The Continuity of Law and Life, was published, and she addressed our topic thus:

“Spirit must be infinite in its origin, to be immortal in its destiny. A beginning signifies an end. Neither the beginning nor the end concerns us now as much as the interim – the interlude, the tragedy or travesty, as the case may be. For between the beginning and the end, so to speak, or, between infinite origin and unending duration is the field of immortality. Life, the consciousness of this stage of existence, and death, the commencement of the next, are assured. Preparing for the unending future is what should most concern us all while here on earth.”

Every day on this physical plane we are presented with opportunities for love, compassion, laughter, personal and spiritual growth and so many others. Our responsibility is to seize the day – Carpe Diem not because of some doubt about tommorrow; rather because each day is a step along the path of our eternal journey. We are all in the boat, sailing the sea of eternity; we can’t predict if the water will be choppy or smooth sailing, but we can prepare ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually for whatever may lie ahead. As Spiritualists we know what lies before us, let us seize the opportunities that propel our souls’ eternal travels.

COMMUNITY AND COMMITMENT

Community is characterized by a group of people having a shared indentity and interests. Our community here at Spritualist Desert Church enjoys the fellowship of like-minded individuals who join together in the understanding of Natural Law and the continuity of life as demonstrated through evidential mediumship. Even in this time of uncertainty, thanks to technology, we are able to continue our commitment to Spiritualism, Spirit, and each other – and welcome new people as well!

Modern American Spiritualism has always had an ‘open-door’ policy; all are welcome at the table. The current challenges we are facing have actually made that even more apparent and important as we are joined in services and classes (via Zoom) by people from around the country and the world.

Our commitment in this time must be stronger than ever – we must make sure that our community is looking out for each other, as well as praying for and engaging with our cities, our countires, and the world. As Spiritualists, we are aware of the role that Natural Law plays in our daily lives; and that the outcomes of the decisions and choices we make are ultimately determined by their adherance to Natural Law (Principle 7). Arguably we are living in a historical period of time, and all of us, individually and collectively, CAN make the difference that ultimately leads to change!

“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.”

MAJESTY

“There is a serene and settled majesty to woodland scenery that enters into the soul and delights and elevates it, and fills it with noble inclinations.” – Washington Irving

The Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism affirms that both the physical world and the spiritual realm are governed by the same Natural Laws. Humanity’s evolution on this planet has resulted in our self-conscious awareness of ourselves as individuals, separate and distinct from each other and all other forms of life. Yet, we are all intrinsically connected by Natural Law and through  our relationship with Infinite Intelligence.

Each of us carries a spark of the Divine within and witnesses the manifestation of Infinite Intelligence through the phenomena of nature all around us. Step outside; look at the night sky, the distant mountains, a flower in your garden.  Each step we take in appreciation of the Nature that surrounds us brings us one step closer to true awareness and enlightenment. We are all a link within the grand chain connecting us to Natural Law and thereore, Infinite Intelligence.

Acknowledging the natural wonders around us reminds us that we are each one small spark; it humbles us to the majesty of God’s infinite wonders expressed in the universe that surrounds us. There is no better way to acknowledge the grandeur of creation than to step outside and witness it first hand.

KINDNESS

“Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.” – Kahlil Gibran

One could argue that we are living in a period in history when concepts like kindness, empathy, compassion and tolerance seem to be frequently in short supply. The news and our emails are bombarded with details of the tragic occurrences happening to our fellow humans. It’s hard to get a grasp on the dimension or scope of some of these things, but one thing is clear: the one part in all of it that we can have ultimate control of is ourselves.

As Spiritualists we know we are each personally responsible for our actions and decisions as outlined in our 7th Principle. In this human experience all of us make mistakes and bad choices; Victoria Barnes reminds us that Natural Law is like a ‘kind teacher’ that ‘points out our mistakes’. Natural Law is immutable, it never wavers and when we make poor choices, the resulting outcome is commensurate with that choice.

In this time when compassion and compromise are perceived as 4-letter words by some, let us remember our Spiritualist Philosophy of the pursuit of wisdom gained through human experience. We are here to learn from our mistakes and grow into better, wiser persons. Each interaction we engage in is an opportunity for growth and understanding; and every interaction counts, even those that may to us seem minor.

“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”–Robert F. Kennedy

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

As Spiritualists, we do not refer to Infinite Intelligence as ‘Father’ or ‘Father God’.  We do not assign such anthropomorphic characteristics (‘human’ characteristics) onto the intelligent power responsible for all of the manifestations of nature, both physical and spiritual. We have to resist the temptation to define the infinite through our finite physical lenses.

Our human experience leads us to this temptation; we literally begin this physical journey with a Mother and a Father. For most of us, our early childhoods are ruled by parents who are the ultimate powers in charge of our well-being. As we evolve and mature, many of us also become parents ourselves, leading us to new realizations about our own Mother and Father and the responsibilities involved in raising a child.

Fatherhood has evolved within our society over time. Fathers used to be perceived as the one responsible for providing for and protecting the family; now they are just as likely to be doing the laundry, washing the dishes, or taking the kids to soccer practice. The lines may have blurred, but the dedication and love involved has not. Please take time this Father’s Day to recognize those that have acted as ‘father figures’ in our lives. Biologically related or not, our human existence is built on the bond of family and community. Fathers play an integral part in this step of our infinite journey.

“He never made a fortune or a noise in the world where men are seeking after fame;

But he had a healthy brood of girls and boys who loved the very ground on which he trod.

They thought him just little short of God;

Oh you should have heard the way they said his name – ‘Father’.”

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE?

“I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be.”   – Albert Einstein

Modern American Spiritualism states that the purpose of this physical existence is the growth of the individual: spiritually, mentally, morally, and physically. In order to grow we each have to embrace the concept of change. One definition of ‘change’ is ‘to make or become different’; a scary thought for many of us. As we awaken to the realization of our nature as eternal spirits having a physical experience, we must also acknowledge that the burden of responsibility for this growth rests squarely on our own shoulders.

Principle 7 affirms our moral duty as individuals, and part of this includes our willingness to pursue personal growth – which inevitably results in change. We must strive to make a conscious effort to engage each person with love and understanding as expressed in The Golden Rule (Principle 6). Part of this effort in growth must also be directed to our relationship with Infinite Intelligence.

Prayer, meditation, and contemplation are key elements in changing our viewpoint of our roles in this world and the next. We are spiritual beings, and as such we pray to talk to God, and we meditate to listen, gaining valuable guidance, inspiration, and advice from Spirit. The time spent in these contemplative endeavors not only improves our own mental and spiritual states, but reflects outward to all of our interactions with the rest of our fellow humans.

‘Change’ does not have to be a negative event; it can be transformative and life-changing. It is the reason we are here on the earth plane. Each interaction reflects on the next, building the new person we can become.

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”       – Mother Teresa

June 7, 2020         Vol 1, Number 12

Modern American Spiritualism was founded by those who were actively involved in the social causes of their day. It was a divisive time in our country’s history, and a civil war would soon divide our society. The Abolitionist cause succeeded, but the problems of equality, justice, and tolerance remain with us 150 years later.

As Spiritualists we know that all of humanity shares one vital link in common: the spark of the Divine that resides within each one of us. Our physical body is the vehicle of expression for this physical existence only; we are all eternal spirits from the same source, Infinite Intelligence. As such, we are all inherently equal by definition. However, that understanding does not translate to the day-to-day experience of many of our brothers and sisters.

“We should all know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value.” – Maya Angelou

Since its Advent, Modern American Spiritualism has embraced the inclusion of all; everyone is welcome regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, disability, age, or sexual orientation. Our Principles reflect the recognition of the value of every person, and our own moral responsibility as individuals. We are living in another defining moment in history. Let us make our founders proud and walk the path of love that Spirit has set before us as our ultimate goal.

If We Knew Each Other

If I knew you and you knew me – If both of us could clearly see,

And with an inner sight divine, the meaning of your heart and mine –

I’m sure that we would differ less, and clasp our hands in friendliness;

Our thoughts would pleasantly agree, if I knew you and you knew me.

SPIRIT COMMUNICATION

The practice of spirit communication through mediumship is a cornerstone of Modern American Spiritualism and the truth of the continuity of life is demonstrated regularly in our church services. Our NSAC Spiritualist Manual lists several reasons why this is the case.

– “To learn from their moral lessons.”Natural Law rules this world and the next, “as above, so below”, and the Law of Attraction applies here as well. Our goal should be to attract those entities that bring forward the higher teachings that will help evolve and build up our character.

– “To receive instruction from spirits.”This includes the makeup of the Spirit World itself. Who better to learn from than the entities that dwell there?

– “To hold communication with our loved ones in the Spirit World.”This validation of the continuity of life expresses the continued love shared by all of us with our dear family and friends who have transitioned beyond the veil.

– “To seek the advice of spirits in matters affecting our mundane welfare.”While in no way infallible, the advice of spirit entities does come from a wholly different perspective. Spirit is often in a better place to see what might lie ahead on our path here on the Earth plane.

“Mediums, as intermediaries, have enabled spirit people to comfort the sad and encourage the weak; to relive the doubter and console the bereaved; to confirm the old-world traditions regarding bygone spirit intervention and revelation, and supplement our hopes and intuitions with proof palpable.”  – Mediumship Explained by E.W. and M.H. Wallis

MEMORIAL DAY

Our current Memorial Day holiday originally started as Decoration Day on the 30th of May. General John A. Logan is credited with starting this observance in 1868 in honor of the soldiers that died during the Civil War. Eventually this evolved to include all military personnel who had died in all wars (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan). In 1968 Congress approved the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and Memorial Day officially became the last Monday in May in 1971.

Observances may include parades and visiting cemeteries or memorials. The wearing of red poppy’s used to be a popular tribute. Today, it is more often the 3-day weekend that promotes the beginning of summer and includes parties and barbecues. As Spiritualists we encourage each other to look forward, to engage in the evolution of Natural Law and the path that lies before us. But sometimes it is important to remember where we have been; whether it is to our founders and pioneers of our Religion of Spiritualism that we look, or to our own beloved family member or fellow Americans who gave their lives in service to their fellow citizens.

Our world is as divided by thoughts and opinions as it has ever been. Our Principles guide us in traversing the sometimes-perilous waters we tread. Principle 6 and 7 are our outlines for interactions with each other and ourselves. We are all individually responsible for creating the world in which we want to live and for our conduct within this physical existence. Let’s celebrate our similarities and our diversity as we navigate this life; let’s express our gratitude for our military members, both now and in the past, and especially to those who have died in service to our country.

“Liberty is never unalienable; it must be redeemed regularly with the blood of patriots or it always vanishes. Of all the so-called natural human rights that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is never free of cost.” – Robert A. Heinlein

THE MOTTO OF SPIRITUALISM

“As the sunflower turns its face to the light of the sun, so Spiritualism turns the face of humanity to the light of Truth.” (NSAC Manual)

Why is the sunflower our symbol and the focus of the motto for Modern Spiritualism? In the ancient world, yellow was considered to represent truth and constancy. It was used by the women’s movement in the 1800’s and has been the emblem of Spiritualism since 1892 and adopted into our bylaws in 1893. Spiritualism and the sunflower share numerous characteristics which led to its adoption by Spiritualists.

— The sunflower and Modern American Spiritualism are both native to the United States, but have both spread to all corners of the globe (it is the state flower of Kansas and the national flower of Ukraine)

— Sunflowers are selective attractors of pollinators; Spiritualism also attracts a select group of people looking for knowledge, not simply faith.

— The large flowering head and great height of the sunflower protects smaller plants; the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism helps guard against superstition and fear.

— Sunflowers rely on their strong stalks for the strength required for such a large plant; Spiritualism affirms that the moral responsibility of each individual builds the character required to help unite humanity in peace and understanding.

Finally, sunflowers are ‘heliotropic’; they track the sun via circadian rhythms. The faces of the young flowers follow the sun from sunrise to sunset every day until maturity. As our motto says, it is our responsibility as Spiritualist to engage in turning the face of humanity towards the truth expressed in our Nine Principles. The sunflower is the perfect emblem for our goals.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

The word ‘Mother’ has a few nuances; it can be a noun or a verb. It might describe a relationship between two people, or it could explain the action of giving birth or the process of raising an offspring. Regardless, this concept of responsibility for another is universally shared by all of us, here and in the Spirit World.

One of our primary tenets in Spiritualism is expressed in our 7th Principle: the personal responsibility of the individual. There is no higher responsibility than that of a parent raising a child, and our mothers have collectively given each of us the opportunity to experience this physical existence and opened the doorway to the unfoldment of our individual spirits.

This Mother’s Day, take a moment to reflect on your own ‘mother’ experience; as a child, as a parent, as the beneficiary of someone who took you under their wing and became a ‘mother’ to you. This human existence is built on the bond of family, whether biological or not; we all share the need for love and validation. Let’s all make sure we extend a big ‘thank you’ to those that put our needs ahead of their own and helped us learn the lesson of service to others.

*****

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

THE TRINITY OF SPIRITUALISM

Spiritualism has some basic differences from Christianity; one main difference is the concept of the Trinity. Unlike the Christian belief in a triune Godhead, Spiritualists recognize two different trinities:

1- The trinity within the definition of Spiritualism – the Science, Philosophy, and Religion.

2- The 3 divisions or life principles of the individual – spirit, soul, and physical body.

The first describes the overlapping dynamic of Spiritualism as demonstrated through the phenomena and Natural Law. The second defines ‘me’, the individual, given the Divine spark of continuous life by Infinite Intelligence.

We have an obligation to care for our physical body, to nurture ourselves mentally, and to attain the highest level of spirituality we can. Our success depends on our ability to obey the material and spiritual Natural Laws (which our Science, Philosophy, and Religion are based upon). The closer we are in adherence of Natural Law, the more balance we will achieve in our physical existence.

To that end, the question of duty and service to others naturally arises. Acknowledging each person as a fellow child of God leads to the understanding of our personal need to make things better, improve relationships, and truly attempt to live life by our Sixth Principle, the Golden Rule.

The closer we get to living a balanced existence by recognizing our own triune nature inevitably leads to the discovery of our life’s purpose: the development and evolution of our individual spirit. Developing our attunement with the Divine, being of service to others, and expressing love through obedience to the Golden Rule enables us to reap the rewards of a well-lived, well-developed physical existence.

For those who have lost their jobs and their sense of financial security, may they turn to God for renewed hope and strength to survive.

For the continued victims of current wars or conflicts, may healing and prayers also be sent to their families and friends for comfort. For the political leaders of the world, may they truly understand their obligation to serve the people with compassion and understanding. For our beautiful planet, dear Mother Earth and all the creatures who live in Mother Earth’s love and light.

For the darkness that consumes many who have lost their way, may the light of God shine back into their hearts to restore their faith and hope. For the young and elderly, may God protect them on their beginning and ending journey. For the homeless and those fighting any form of addiction.

For all of those in nursing homes, prisons, and institutions. For all the children in orphanages throughout the world, may they all be blessed with caring and loving parents. For all those souls making their transition today and in the days to come.

For all those who are suffering with loneliness, hunger, and sickness throughout the world, may they find peace. For all the animals in our shelters, may they be blessed with a wonderful and loving home.

Finally, may we continue to embrace the spirit of generosity and compassion. May we keep our hearts open and fill each heart with the love of God. May we be thankful for the many blessings Infinite Intelligence bestows upon us daily. Amen”

MINDFULNESS

‘Mindfulness’: ‘the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis’.

–Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The act of being mindful is not an easy task or one that is learned quickly. It’s accomplished one small piece at a time, one moment at a time. Do you remember looking at a sunset and appreciating the beauty of that instant? That was a mindful act. Now expand that idea to all  the individual moments, day-to-day, of this earthly experience…not an easy ask for anyone.

Are we always consciously aware of our thoughts and emotions as we react to the events going on around us? Of course not. The first step is to try and be aware of an instinctual reaction, as opposed to a mindful one. More than likely the first one will be judgmental in nature and the second one will not be.

One of the best ways to approach mindfulness as a habit is meditation. As we center ourselves, we increase not only our own internal awareness, but our external perceptions of others and the world at large. Meditation helps focus our minds and calm our emotions, decreasing our judgmental gut reactions.

As we look inward, we find the solutions to our outward problems. Healing must start from within and always extends into all our other interactions. Those who only look at the ‘big picture’ of life miss the precious little moments.  Every heart beat is an opportunity for being grateful and mindful of this incredible opportunity we have been given in this physical existence.

“Every step taken in mindfulness brings us one step closer to healing ourselves and the planet.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen master

-Jennifer Rosson, LM

PAUSE FOR THE CAUSE

Hopefully we are all remembering to pause at 9:00 am or 9:00 pm  (or both!) for our moment of silent prayer/reflection for our family, friends, community, country, and world; all of those in need of healing at this time. Also, remember to include all of the ‘heroes’ (first responders, nurses, doctors, etc.) that are sacrificing so much in the fight against this pandemic.

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL HEALING

I ask the Great Unseen Healing Force to remove all obstructions from my mind and body and to restore me to perfect health.

I ask this in all sincerity and honesty and I will do my part.

I ask this Great Unseen Healing Force to help both present and absent ones who are in need of help and to restore them to perfect health.

“The NSAC Prayer for Spiritual Healing is more than mere words. It first appeals to the Unseen Healing Force to cleanse the Healer’s mind and body, then asks that it heal others. Finally, it affirms our trust in the Infinite’s power and love. Prayer is a mighty force. When linked with energy from the spirit realms, it expands to embrace the positive, eliminates the negative, and helps perfect health to manifest.”

OUR DUTY TO OTHERS

April is celebrated as the month that Americans acknowledge and give thanks for volunteerism and service. When we speak of ‘service’ within the context of our Philosophy as Spiritualists, it typically refers to the actions of kindness, compassion, and helpfulness that we offer during our interactions with others in this physical existence. The Spiritualist Manual states a person’s duty on this Earth, “encompasses the entirety of conduct, mentally, morally, and spiritually”. It also explains that this evolves through the attainment of knowledge, leading to the development of our character and harmony with our own, unfolded spiritual state.

Our spiritual awakening as individuals evolves over time, just as the Earth does as a planet, just as cultures do within society, and just as our Religion of Spiritualism changes with our growing understanding of Natural Law. One of the ways we have grown as humans living this physical existence is the widespread recognition of the concept that is our 6th Principle, the Golden Rule. Virtually every society and religion has some version of this ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ axiom; this is the Cliff Notes version of what our duty is to each other and can be boiled down to a single word, ‘service’.

Service to others reflects our own inner growth and our recognition that the spark of the Divine resides within us all. It is not just the big things, like volunteering or raising money; service is also the little day-to-day interactions, like a smile for a cashier, holding a door open, bringing in a delivery for a sick neighbor, or any one of an infinite number of kind words or deeds that lead both of you to feeling better about this world. The ramifications ripple outward, like a stone dropped into a pool. We may never know how many we affect every day.

“Each germ of Truth, each act of Love, inherent holds a life divine;

And on them ever from above the dews of heav’n shall fall and shine.

Tho’ riches flee, tho’ friends depart, and broken hopes around thee lie,

Still let this message cheer thy heart; good deeds shall never, never die!”

–Good Deeds Can Never, Never Die by B.F. Austin (The Spiritualist Manual)

WHAT IS A ‘THOUGHT SEED’?

How many times have all of us here at SDC heard The Rev. Vicky Homann remind us, “Thoughts are things!”? Why is that so important? Think about yourself and the people you know; have you noticed a pattern? Those of us who try and keep an even mind and positive thoughts for ourselves and others don’t seem to attract the negative interactions that so many struggle with on a daily basis. The Natural Laws that govern this world and the next govern our thoughts as well, such as the Law of Attraction in this instance.

A garden provides the perfect illustration of the adage, ‘you reap what you sow’. When we plant a garden we give thought to the kind of seeds we will plant, the layout of the garden itself, what kind of soil is needed, how much water and drainage they require, and a myriad other requirements. Once the seeds are planted, they can’t be left on their own; there are weeds to pull, competition to contend with from insects and small furry veggie lovers, as well as harvesting the bounty it eventually presents us.

Our internal life is exactly like that garden. The seeds we plant, the plants we water, and the resulting crop reflects the thoughts that we have encouraged within. And like the beauty presented from a well-tended garden, so our life echoes the status of our life within. We all have a direct hand in creating our own reality; do we create a welcoming place for ourselves, full of love and acceptance? Or, are we sowing the seeds of self-doubt, fear, and resentment?

We are our own ‘Master Gardener’. The thought seeds we plant in our minds need to be consciously chosen and selected carefully, tended passionately, and harvested with compassion to our own self and others. Spring is here, and while we enjoy the beautiful weather offered by this season, let’s take a moment to check on our inner season as well. We all probably have a few weeds that need to be rooted out and replaced with positive thoughts that reflect our true inner hopes, wishes, and dreams for the reality that is created by us all.

The NSAC website (nsac.org) states that, “We can use the laws to choose love, light , peace, growth, and joy. The universe is propelled by law and impelled by love”.

FIVE PRINCIPLES OF SPIRTUAL HEALING

  1. Spiritual healing works with medicine and the physician, not in opposition to them.
  2. The spiritual healing medium has no power of their own; they are a channel for Spirit.
  3. We can all learn the ability to allow this power of Spirit to work through us.
  4. We must genuinely care about others without thought of personal gain or glory.
  5. The recipient of the spiritual healing must have an open, honest, and accepting attitude.

THE ANNIVERSARY OF MODERN AMERICAN SPIRITUALISM

On March 31st we celebrate the anniversary of the Advent of Modern American Spiritualism in 1848. On that day, communication was established with the Spirit World between the Fox sisters and the murdered peddler, Charles B. Rosna. This date has become the demarcation line between ancient and modern spiritualism. The personal communication demonstrated by the Fox sisters between this physical plane and the spiritual plane revealed the fallacy of both the need for intercession by priests and the belief in magic and superstition as an explanation of spirit phenomena.

The events within that small cottage in Hydesville showed that the spirit world was bound by the same Natural Laws that govern this earth plane. Swedenborg, Mesmer, Mother Ann Lee, and A.J. Davis bridged the gulf between ancient and modern spiritualism, paving the path that led to that fateful day. This New Dispensation of Modern American Spiritualism could be described as an amalgamation of man’s mortal investigation into the spirit side of life. Death is only a gateway; the soul continues, and communication with the Spiritual World is a function of the Natural Laws that govern this world and the next.

“Spiritualism is a religion that consists of doing good and acting honestly toward one another; a religion, not of forms and ceremonies, nor of long prayers and longer faces, but a religion of kindness, justice, and good works; a religion that will make life brighter and more livable, and will bring back smiles to the lips and happiness to the souls of all who understand and live up to its highest teachings.” – Thomas Grimshaw, (1867-1938) Trustee/Vice-President NSA

A PAUSE FOR THE CAUSE

“Absent healing is the generating and transmitting of healing energies to the recipient at a distance and precludes any physical contact. Through the application of Absent or Distant Healing, spiritual beings (Spirit Intelligences) combine their own healing forces with the magnetism and vitalizing energy of spirit healers and convey them to the recipient who is at a distance.” – NSAC Spiritualist Manual

We all recognize the need currently for social distancing; however, that doesn’t mitigate our concern for family, friends, country, and world. Join us in taking a daily ‘pause for the cause’, a moment of silent reflection, positive intention, and prayer for all those who need healing at this time. Set your favorite time-keeping device for 9:00 AM or 9:00 PM (or both!) and take just a moment to silently join in collective thought for the healing so desperately needed by so many.

GRATITUDE DAY

The fourth Sunday in March is designated in the NSAC Bylaws as ‘Gratitude Day’, honoring the founding of Modern American Spiritualism and the workers who dedicate their lives to furthering our knowledge of the Spirit World.

Gratitude is defined in the dictionary as the quality of being thankful and our will-ingness to show appreciation for and to return a kindness. As Spiritualists, we have so much to be grateful for as we enjoy the freedom to practice our religion without fear, a religion that has eliminated the fear so many have by proving the continuity of life.

Let us all take a moment in these stressful times to express our gratitude to our forbearers; our guides, doctors, chemists, healers, family, and friends who work with us from the Spirit World; and for our workers here on the Earth plane. Let us also be aware of our interactions with others, showing appreciation for the little things, and paying it forward where we can.

“Spiritualism is a religion that consists of doing good and acting honestly toward one another; a religion, not of forms and ceremonies, nor of long prayers and longer faces, but a religion of kindness, justice, and good works; a religion that will make life brighter and more livable, and will bring back smiles to the lips and happiness to the souls of all who understand and live up to its highest teachings.”
– Thomas Grimshaw (1868-1938)
