SPIRIT COMMUNICATION

The practice of spirit communication through mediumship is a cornerstone of Modern American Spiritualism and the truth of the continuity of life is demonstrated regularly in our church services. Our NSAC Spiritualist Manual lists several reasons why this is the case.

– “To learn from their moral lessons.”Natural Law rules this world and the next, “as above, so below”, and the Law of Attraction applies here as well. Our goal should be to attract those entities that bring forward the higher teachings that will help evolve and build up our character.

– “To receive instruction from spirits.”This includes the makeup of the Spirit World itself. Who better to learn from than the entities that dwell there?

– “To hold communication with our loved ones in the Spirit World.”This validation of the continuity of life expresses the continued love shared by all of us with our dear family and friends who have transitioned beyond the veil.

– “To seek the advice of spirits in matters affecting our mundane welfare.”While in no way infallible, the advice of spirit entities does come from a wholly different perspective. Spirit is often in a better place to see what might lie ahead on our path here on the Earth plane.

“Mediums, as intermediaries, have enabled spirit people to comfort the sad and encourage the weak; to relive the doubter and console the bereaved; to confirm the old-world traditions regarding bygone spirit intervention and revelation, and supplement our hopes and intuitions with proof palpable.”  – Mediumship Explained by E.W. and M.H. Wallis

MEMORIAL DAY

Our current Memorial Day holiday originally started as Decoration Day on the 30th of May. General John A. Logan is credited with starting this observance in 1868 in honor of the soldiers that died during the Civil War. Eventually this evolved to include all military personnel who had died in all wars (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan). In 1968 Congress approved the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and Memorial Day officially became the last Monday in May in 1971.

Observances may include parades and visiting cemeteries or memorials. The wearing of red poppy’s used to be a popular tribute. Today, it is more often the 3-day weekend that promotes the beginning of summer and includes parties and barbecues. As Spiritualists we encourage each other to look forward, to engage in the evolution of Natural Law and the path that lies before us. But sometimes it is important to remember where we have been; whether it is to our founders and pioneers of our Religion of Spiritualism that we look, or to our own beloved family member or fellow Americans who gave their lives in service to their fellow citizens.

Our world is as divided by thoughts and opinions as it has ever been. Our Principles guide us in traversing the sometimes-perilous waters we tread. Principle 6 and 7 are our outlines for interactions with each other and ourselves. We are all individually responsible for creating the world in which we want to live and for our conduct within this physical existence. Let’s celebrate our similarities and our diversity as we navigate this life; let’s express our gratitude for our military members, both now and in the past, and especially to those who have died in service to our country.

“Liberty is never unalienable; it must be redeemed regularly with the blood of patriots or it always vanishes. Of all the so-called natural human rights that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is never free of cost.” – Robert A. Heinlein

THE MOTTO OF SPIRITUALISM

“As the sunflower turns its face to the light of the sun, so Spiritualism turns the face of humanity to the light of Truth.” (NSAC Manual)

Why is the sunflower our symbol and the focus of the motto for Modern Spiritualism? In the ancient world, yellow was considered to represent truth and constancy. It was used by the women’s movement in the 1800’s and has been the emblem of Spiritualism since 1892 and adopted into our bylaws in 1893. Spiritualism and the sunflower share numerous characteristics which led to its adoption by Spiritualists.

— The sunflower and Modern American Spiritualism are both native to the United States, but have both spread to all corners of the globe (it is the state flower of Kansas and the national flower of Ukraine)

— Sunflowers are selective attractors of pollinators; Spiritualism also attracts a select group of people looking for knowledge, not simply faith.

— The large flowering head and great height of the sunflower protects smaller plants; the Science, Philosophy, and Religion of Spiritualism helps guard against superstition and fear.

— Sunflowers rely on their strong stalks for the strength required for such a large plant; Spiritualism affirms that the moral responsibility of each individual builds the character required to help unite humanity in peace and understanding.

Finally, sunflowers are ‘heliotropic’; they track the sun via circadian rhythms. The faces of the young flowers follow the sun from sunrise to sunset every day until maturity. As our motto says, it is our responsibility as Spiritualist to engage in turning the face of humanity towards the truth expressed in our Nine Principles. The sunflower is the perfect emblem for our goals.

We are concerned with touching souls so that the spark of the divine spirit which is embedded within every human being can be fanned and become a beauteous flame. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

The word ‘Mother’ has a few nuances; it can be a noun or a verb. It might describe a relationship between two people, or it could explain the action of giving birth or the process of raising an offspring. Regardless, this concept of responsibility for another is universally shared by all of us, here and in the Spirit World.

One of our primary tenets in Spiritualism is expressed in our 7th Principle: the personal responsibility of the individual. There is no higher responsibility than that of a parent raising a child, and our mothers have collectively given each of us the opportunity to experience this physical existence and opened the doorway to the unfoldment of our individual spirits.

This Mother’s Day, take a moment to reflect on your own ‘mother’ experience; as a child, as a parent, as the beneficiary of someone who took you under their wing and became a ‘mother’ to you. This human existence is built on the bond of family, whether biological or not; we all share the need for love and validation. Let’s all make sure we extend a big ‘thank you’ to those that put our needs ahead of their own and helped us learn the lesson of service to others.

*****

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

— Washington Irving

THE TRINITY OF SPIRITUALISM

Spiritualism has some basic differences from Christianity; one main difference is the concept of the Trinity. Unlike the Christian belief in a triune Godhead, Spiritualists recognize two different trinities:

1- The trinity within the definition of Spiritualism – the Science, Philosophy, and Religion.

2- The 3 divisions or life principles of the individual – spirit, soul, and physical body.

The first describes the overlapping dynamic of Spiritualism as demonstrated through the phenomena and Natural Law. The second defines ‘me’, the individual, given the Divine spark of continuous life by Infinite Intelligence.

We have an obligation to care for our physical body, to nurture ourselves mentally, and to attain the highest level of spirituality we can. Our success depends on our ability to obey the material and spiritual Natural Laws (which our Science, Philosophy, and Religion are based upon). The closer we are in adherence of Natural Law, the more balance we will achieve in our physical existence.

To that end, the question of duty and service to others naturally arises. Acknowledging each person as a fellow child of God leads to the understanding of our personal need to make things better, improve relationships, and truly attempt to live life by our Sixth Principle, the Golden Rule.

The closer we get to living a balanced existence by recognizing our own triune nature inevitably leads to the discovery of our life’s purpose: the development and evolution of our individual spirit. Developing our attunement with the Divine, being of service to others, and expressing love through obedience to the Golden Rule enables us to reap the rewards of a well-lived, well-developed physical existence.

Extended Prayer for Spiritual Healing

“We extend our healing and prayers to: Our Spiritual community, may we all serve as a beacon of hope, joy, and peace; and continue to become the true beacon of light that we are spiritually meant to be. For those who have lost their jobs and their sense of financial security, may they turn to God for renewed hope and strength to survive.

For the continued victims of current wars or conflicts, may healing and prayers also be sent to their families and friends for comfort. For the political leaders of the world, may they truly understand their obligation to serve the people with compassion and understanding. For our beautiful planet, dear Mother Earth and all the creatures who live in Mother Earth’s love and light.

For the darkness that consumes many who have lost their way, may the light of God shine back into their hearts to restore their faith and hope. For the young and elderly, may God protect them on their beginning and ending journey. For the homeless and those fighting any form of addiction.

For all of those in nursing homes, prisons, and institutions. For all the children in orphanages throughout the world, may they all be blessed with caring and loving parents. For all those souls making their transition today and in the days to come.

For all those who are suffering with loneliness, hunger, and sickness throughout the world, may they find peace. For all the animals in our shelters, may they be blessed with a wonderful and loving home.

Finally, may we continue to embrace the spirit of generosity and compassion. May we keep our hearts open and fill each heart with the love of God. May we be thankful for the many blessings Infinite Intelligence bestows upon us daily. Amen”

MINDFULNESS

‘Mindfulness’: ‘the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis’.

–Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The act of being mindful is not an easy task or one that is learned quickly. It’s accomplished one small piece at a time, one moment at a time. Do you remember looking at a sunset and appreciating the beauty of that instant? That was a mindful act. Now expand that idea to all  the individual moments, day-to-day, of this earthly experience…not an easy ask for anyone.

Are we always consciously aware of our thoughts and emotions as we react to the events going on around us? Of course not. The first step is to try and be aware of an instinctual reaction, as opposed to a mindful one. More than likely the first one will be judgmental in nature and the second one will not be.

One of the best ways to approach mindfulness as a habit is meditation. As we center ourselves, we increase not only our own internal awareness, but our external perceptions of others and the world at large. Meditation helps focus our minds and calm our emotions, decreasing our judgmental gut reactions.

As we look inward, we find the solutions to our outward problems. Healing must start from within and always extends into all our other interactions. Those who only look at the ‘big picture’ of life miss the precious little moments.  Every heart beat is an opportunity for being grateful and mindful of this incredible opportunity we have been given in this physical existence.

“Every step taken in mindfulness brings us one step closer to healing ourselves and the planet.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen master

When linked with energy from the spirit realms, it expands to embrace the positive, eliminates the negative, and helps perfect health to manifest.”

OUR DUTY TO OTHERS

April is celebrated as the month that Americans acknowledge and give thanks for volunteerism and service. When we speak of ‘service’ within the context of our Philosophy as Spiritualists, it typically refers to the actions of kindness, compassion, and helpfulness that we offer during our interactions with others in this physical existence. The Spiritualist Manual states a person’s duty on this Earth, “encompasses the entirety of conduct, mentally, morally, and spiritually”. It also explains that this evolves through the attainment of knowledge, leading to the development of our character and harmony with our own, unfolded spiritual state.

Our spiritual awakening as individuals evolves over time, just as the Earth does as a planet, just as cultures do within society, and just as our Religion of Spiritualism changes with our growing understanding of Natural Law. One of the ways we have grown as humans living this physical existence is the widespread recognition of the concept that is our 6th Principle, the Golden Rule. Virtually every society and religion has some version of this ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ axiom; this is the Cliff Notes version of what our duty is to each other and can be boiled down to a single word, ‘service’.

Service to others reflects our own inner growth and our recognition that the spark of the Divine resides within us all. It is not just the big things, like volunteering or raising money; service is also the little day-to-day interactions, like a smile for a cashier, holding a door open, bringing in a delivery for a sick neighbor, or any one of an infinite number of kind words or deeds that lead both of you to feeling better about this world. The ramifications ripple outward, like a stone dropped into a pool. We may never know how many we affect every day.

“Each germ of Truth, each act of Love, inherent holds a life divine;

And on them ever from above the dews of heav’n shall fall and shine.

Tho’ riches flee, tho’ friends depart, and broken hopes around thee lie,

Still let this message cheer thy heart; good deeds shall never, never die!”

–Good Deeds Can Never, Never Die by B.F. Austin (The Spiritualist Manual)

WHAT IS A ‘THOUGHT SEED’?

How many times have all of us here at SDC heard The Rev. Vicky Homann remind us, “Thoughts are things!”? Why is that so important? Think about yourself and the people you know; have you noticed a pattern? Those of us who try and keep an even mind and positive thoughts for ourselves and others don’t seem to attract the negative interactions that so many struggle with on a daily basis. The Natural Laws that govern this world and the next govern our thoughts as well, such as the Law of Attraction in this instance.

A garden provides the perfect illustration of the adage, ‘you reap what you sow’. When we plant a garden we give thought to the kind of seeds we will plant, the layout of the garden itself, what kind of soil is needed, how much water and drainage they require, and a myriad other requirements. Once the seeds are planted, they can’t be left on their own; there are weeds to pull, competition to contend with from insects and small furry veggie lovers, as well as harvesting the bounty it eventually presents us.

Our internal life is exactly like that garden. The seeds we plant, the plants we water, and the resulting crop reflects the thoughts that we have encouraged within. And like the beauty presented from a well-tended garden, so our life echoes the status of our life within. We all have a direct hand in creating our own reality; do we create a welcoming place for ourselves, full of love and acceptance? Or, are we sowing the seeds of self-doubt, fear, and resentment?

We are our own ‘Master Gardener’. The thought seeds we plant in our minds need to be consciously chosen and selected carefully, tended passionately, and harvested with compassion to our own self and others. Spring is here, and while we enjoy the beautiful weather offered by this season, let’s take a moment to check on our inner season as well. We all probably have a few weeds that need to be rooted out and replaced with positive thoughts that reflect our true inner hopes, wishes, and dreams for the reality that is created by us all.

The NSAC website (nsac.org) states that, “We can use the laws to choose love, light , peace, growth, and joy. The universe is propelled by law and impelled by love”.

FIVE PRINCIPLES OF SPIRTUAL HEALING

  1. Spiritual healing works with medicine and the physician, not in opposition to them.
  2. The spiritual healing medium has no power of their own; they are a channel for Spirit.
  3. We can all learn the ability to allow this power of Spirit to work through us.
  4. We must genuinely care about others without thought of personal gain or glory.
  5. The recipient of the spiritual healing must have an open, honest, and accepting attitude.

THE ANNIVERSARY OF MODERN AMERICAN SPIRITUALISM

On March 31st we celebrate the anniversary of the Advent of Modern American Spiritualism in 1848. On that day, communication was established with the Spirit World between the Fox sisters and the murdered peddler, Charles B. Rosna. This date has become the demarcation line between ancient and modern spiritualism. The personal communication demonstrated by the Fox sisters between this physical plane and the spiritual plane revealed the fallacy of both the need for intercession by priests and the belief in magic and superstition as an explanation of spirit phenomena.

The events within that small cottage in Hydesville showed that the spirit world was bound by the same Natural Laws that govern this earth plane. Swedenborg, Mesmer, Mother Ann Lee, and A.J. Davis bridged the gulf between ancient and modern spiritualism, paving the path that led to that fateful day. This New Dispensation of Modern American Spiritualism could be described as an amalgamation of man’s mortal investigation into the spirit side of life. Death is only a gateway; the soul continues, and communication with the Spiritual World is a function of the Natural Laws that govern this world and the next.

********************************************************************************

“Spiritualism is a religion that consists of doing good and acting honestly toward one another; a religion, not of forms and ceremonies, nor of long prayers and longer faces, but a religion of kindness, justice, and good works; a religion that will make life brighter and more livable, and will bring back smiles to the lips and happiness to the souls of all who understand and live up to its highest teachings.” – Thomas Grimshaw, (1867-1938) Trustee/Vice-President NSA

A PAUSE FOR THE CAUSE

“Absent healing is the generating and transmitting of healing energies to the recipient at a distance and precludes any physical contact. Through the application of Absent or Distant Healing, spiritual beings (Spirit Intelligences) combine their own healing forces with the magnetism and vitalizing energy of spirit healers and convey them to the recipient who is at a distance.” – NSAC Spiritualist Manual

We all recognize the need currently for social distancing; however, that doesn’t mitigate our concern for family, friends, country, and world. Join us in taking a daily ‘pause for the cause’, a moment of silent reflection, positive intention, and prayer for all those who need healing at this time. Set your favorite time-keeping device for 9:00 AM or 9:00 PM (or both!) and take just a moment to silently join in collective thought for the healing so desperately needed by so many.

GRATITUDE DAY

The fourth Sunday in March is designated in the NSAC Bylaws as ‘Gratitude Day’, honoring the founding of Modern American Spiritualism and the workers who dedicate their lives to furthering our knowledge of the Spirit World.

Gratitude is defined in the dictionary as the quality of being thankful and our will-ingness to show appreciation for and to return a kindness. As Spiritualists, we have so much to be grateful for as we enjoy the freedom to practice our religion without fear, a religion that has eliminated the fear so many have by proving the continuity of life.

Let us all take a moment in these stressful times to express our gratitude to our forbearers; our guides, doctors, chemists, healers, family, and friends who work with us from the Spirit World; and for our workers here on the Earth plane. Let us also be aware of our interactions with others, showing appreciation for the little things, and paying it forward where we can.

“Spiritualism is a religion that consists of doing good and acting honestly toward one another; a religion, not of forms and ceremonies, nor of long prayers and longer faces, but a religion of kindness, justice, and good works; a religion that will make life brighter and more livable, and will bring back smiles to the lips and happiness to the souls of all who understand and live up to its highest teachings.”
– Thomas Grimshaw (1868-1938)

“As the sunflower turns its face toward the light of the sun, so Spiritualism turns the face of humanity toward the light of truth.”
